Overview

This role is a key member of the Systems Engineering function, responsible for leading a team of Systems Engineers in the planning, conduct, and reporting of SE activities for an assigned project or programme. The team provides support within the Control Systems Account through the Project Lifecycle, from defining customer needs to delivery and in‑service support.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support the allocated SE team in specifying, planning, completing, and delivering Systems Engineering activities throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Produce and review project technical documentation to align with the project schedule.
  • Prepare for and successfully deliver key design reviews (e.g., SRR/PDR/CDR) in accordance with the Systems Engineering processes and programme schedule.
  • Technically manage suppliers, ensuring requirements and design baselines are maintained.
  • Review and challenge technical documentation received from the customer and suppliers.
  • Lead or support reviews with the customer and key suppliers.
  • Ensure adequate integration with other engineering functions involved in the delivery of the programme (Hardware, Mechanical, Software, V&V, ILS, IA, Safety, etc.).
  • Manage the tracking and reporting of technical and task leadership to deliver planned outputs on time, within cost and quality targets, prioritising work, metrics, resolving issues, or escalating as necessary.
  • Line‑manage the assigned Systems Engineers, including defining and maintaining skills and competencies, timesheet management, personal development, support and reporting.
  • Drive decision‑making processes for exceptional activities, circumstances, and deviations.
  • Support risk reviews, programme reviews, and design reviews.
  • Drive and support industry best practice for engineering involving design, development, integration, verification, validation and qualification.
  • Ensure designs comply with approved management plans, using approved design methods, competent personnel, effective delivery systems and design processes.
  • Engage effectively with the Practice and Governance Team on programme constraints, challenges and changes.
  • Lead team risk and opportunity management.
  • Lead or support estimation activities.

Qualifications

  • Degree qualification in a relevant engineering or technical subject (e.g., Systems Engineering, Software, Electrical Engineering or similar).
  • 3–5 years’ experience in a Systems Engineering role within defence, maritime, aerospace, or a similarly regulated industrial sector, including supervisory activities.
  • Experience in systems requirements management, definition, design, integration, acceptance and analysis.
  • Knowledge of Control Systems and experience with PLC, SCADA and related Operational Technology systems.
  • Knowledge of Systems Engineering models and techniques.
  • Able to work with people effectively at all levels, using well‑developed influencing and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience of model‑based design techniques, including tools such as Enterprise Architect.
  • Team leadership experience or a strong aptitude for managing and developing people.
  • Effective communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience in requirements management (including tools such as DOORS or similar).
  • Knowledge of marine electronic equipment and/or the marine environment.
  • Familiar with industry, military and environmental standards (e.g., ISO/IEC 15288, DEF STAN 00‑35, 59‑411).
  • Knowledge and experience of engineering safety‑related systems (SIL 2/3).
  • Knowledge/Experience of V&V activities, including IADT, Environmental & EMC qualification with external test houses.
  • INCOSE Associate/Chartered Systems Engineering Professional.
  • Must be able to gain and maintain the relevant UK Government security clearance in line with the job role (SC).
