Senior house officer (FY3) in GASTROENTEROLOGY

As a Senior House Officer in Gastroenterology, you will primarily look after inpatients with gastrointestinal disorders admitted to St Thomas Hospital. You will work under the supervision of Gastroenterology consultants and specialist trainees, mainly on the Gastroenterology ward, with occasional postings to other medical and surgical wards. The role follows a 7‑day rota (1:5) covering weekdays and weekends from 8.30 am to 9 pm, with no night shifts and no general medical on‑call duties.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide clinical care and support for patients in the Gastroenterology ward and associated units.
  • Support the Gastroenterology Day Unit (GDU) – deliver paracentesis to patients with liver disease and perform specialist treatments for IBD; provide follow‑up reviews.
  • Learn the basics of abdominal ultrasound.
  • Participate in service development and quality improvement projects, including audits.
  • Undertake administrative duties such as writing letters and advising GPs and other specialties.
  • Collaborate with specialist services (IBD, artificial nutrition, hepatobiliary); attend specialist clinics and multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Observe endoscopy procedures and contribute to the team’s research and audit portfolio.
  • Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.

Qualifications and Training

  • Full GMC Registration with licence to practice.
  • MBBS of equivalent reference, MRCP Part 1 or equivalent.

Clinical Experience

  • Hospital‑based experience in Acute and General Medicine and basic gastroenterology.
  • At least 6 months of postgraduate experience in Gastroenterology.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with colleagues, patients and carers.

Research

  • Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research.
  • Evidence of the ability to carry out and complete clinical research projects.

Teaching

  • Experience supervising medical students and providing informal teaching.
  • Certificate in medical education.

Other

  • Understanding and adherence to the principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the General Medical Council.
  • Evidence of contribution to effective clinical audit and clinical risk management.
