Consultant Ophthalmologist Retina and/or Neuro‑Ophthalmology

The position applied for is a substantive Consultant Ophthalmologist with a sub‑specialist interest in Medical Retina and/or Neuro‑Ophthalmology. The role requirements are to develop and support the existing medical retina service and/or Neuro‑Ophthalmology service.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will:
- Supervise, train and mentor optometrists and orthoptists within the service.
- Specifically adopt, in conjunction with colleagues, an active role in the planning, development and delivery of the Ophthalmology service for the department.
- Provide direct input to patients, contribute to multidisciplinary teams and lead the coordination of care for patients within Preston and Chorley hospitals.
- Promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
- Assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than full time and ensure that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.
- Develop close links with General Practitioners and optometrists operating in the area.
- Exercise the freedom to develop specialist elements of the services to reflect perceived priorities within available resources.
About us
A team of 13 consultants deliver Ophthalmology services across both hospital sites and within a community setting. The department is supported by 1 associate specialist, 2 specialty doctors, 3 North West Deanery trainees, 2 MC trainees and 2 Trust Grade doctors as well as a team of orthoptists/optometrists. Our clinics are sub‑specialist and we no longer have general clinics. We provide care for all major subspecialties including: medical retina, vitreoretinal, paediatric, glaucoma, cornea, oculoplastics, cataract clinics, emergency ophthalmology.
The Ophthalmology department at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is a dynamic, progressive service which is based across 2 sites (Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley District Hospital). Our primary location is the newly opened Lancashire Eye Centre situated in Chorley District Hospital. The centre was funded through an £18 million investment and comprises a 3‑storey building with modern, state‑of‑the‑art outpatient and day‑case facilities on one site. There are over 20 consult rooms in outpatients and 3 modern spacious theatres. The unit is equipped with modern diagnostic facilities and infrastructure to provide high quality care.
As part of the service expansion, an additional 40 support staff were recruited including ophthalmic technicians, administrative and nursing staff.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
- MBBS or equivalent
- FRCOPhth or equivalent
- Must be entered on the Specialist Register (or entry within 6 months)
- Higher Medical Degree (MD or MSc) or ChM
- Management course/certification
Experience
- Sub‑specialty training and experience
- Trained Clinical Supervisor
- Trained Educational Supervisor
- Sub‑specialty fellowship
