Civil Infrastructure Design Engineer – EV Charging Infrastructure – Birmingham (Hybrid) – £55k to £65k

Permanent | Birmingham (Hybrid – Minimum 2 Days Onsite)

Salary: Up to £55–65k DOE

We are supporting a rapidly scaling clean technology engineering business developing next-generation high-power EV charging infrastructure for commercial vehicle applications.

With major growth plans and involvement in large-scale transport electrification programmes, the business is seeking a Civil Infrastructure Design Engineer to support the delivery of EV charging sites from feasibility and concept design through to detailed construction packs and deployment.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a fast-moving engineering environment where you will play a key role in delivering critical charging infrastructure projects supporting the transition to zero-emission transport.

The Role

You will be responsible for the design and coordination of EV charging infrastructure layouts and civil works packages, supporting projects across the full delivery lifecycle.

Working closely with electrical, mechanical, and project delivery teams, you will help develop practical, buildable infrastructure solutions for high-power charging installations.

The role would suit someone with direct EV charging infrastructure experience who enjoys taking ownership of projects and operating within a collaborative scale-up environment.

Key Responsibilities

Infrastructure Design & Project Delivery

  • Produce civil and infrastructure designs for EV charging sites from feasibility through to construction issue
  • Develop detailed site layouts, equipment positioning, trenching routes, ducting, drainage, and access arrangements
  • Create and maintain AutoCAD 2D drawings and technical documentation
  • Support the preparation of full construction and installation packs
  • Coordinate design activities with project managers, contractors, utilities, and multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Support planning, permitting, and stakeholder engagement activities where required

Technical Coordination

  • Work closely with electrical and hardware engineering teams to ensure successful integration of charging infrastructure
  • Support utility connection activities including DNO coordination and substation integration
  • Contribute to cable routing, containment, and infrastructure planning activities
  • Assist with design reviews, constructability assessments, and technical problem-solving
  • Support site surveys and occasional deployment activities

Quality, Compliance & Continuous Improvement

  • Ensure designs comply with applicable standards, regulations, and best practices
  • Support documentation control and engineering change processes
  • Contribute to improving engineering processes, templates, and delivery methodologies
  • Help drive efficient and scalable infrastructure design practices across projects

Experience & Skills Required

Essential

  • Experience delivering EV charging infrastructure or similar electrical infrastructure projects
  • Strong AutoCAD 2D capability
  • Experience producing site layouts and construction-ready design documentation
  • Good understanding of civil infrastructure design and coordination
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and workstreams simultaneously
  • Strong communication and stakeholder coordination skills
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-paced engineering or scale-up environment

Highly Desirable

  • Direct experience designing DC fast charging or high-power EV charging sites
  • Understanding of DNO processes, utility coordination, and substation integration
  • Knowledge of cable sizing, containment, and electrical infrastructure layouts
  • Experience working alongside electrical engineering teams
  • Familiarity with UK infrastructure and construction standards
  • Degree-qualified in Civil Engineering or related discipline preferred, though not essential with relevant experience

Package & Working Arrangement

  • Salary £55,000 – £65,000 DOE
  • Hybrid working – minimum 2 days onsite in Birmingham
  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge EV infrastructure projects
  • Fast-growing business with strong long-term progression opportunities
