Overview
We are seeking an Archaeological Consultant / Professional Archaeological Consultant or Senior Consultant to join AtkinsRéalis Heritage team, supporting the delivery of heritage services and archaeological projects nationally and internationally. You will be based in our London or Birmingham offices. In the Heritage team you will play a vital role, collaborating with clients and design teams across the UK and internationally.
Responsibilities
- Principally manage and QA archaeological fieldwork programmes and subcontractors, including delivering the role of Archaeological Clerk of Works on major infrastructure projects in the South‑East and East of England.
- Contribute to defining and developing the scope, programme, and design of heritage works, including delivery of mitigation and research strategies, and public outreach programmes.
- Provide technical advice to a range of clients and internal teams on diverse projects.
- Prepare and contribute to EIA screening, environmental statements, heritage statements, desk‑based assessments, written schemes of investigation and consent applications.
- Assess heritage constraints to inform and influence design development.
- Deliver medium to large scale projects to ensure they are on time and within budget.
- Consult and liaise with heritage stakeholders and client project teams as required.
- Produce fee proposals and give technical inputs on tenders.
Qualifications
- Strong background in the UK's historical environment with a focus on delivering archaeological fieldwork, commercial awareness and knowledge of the UK planning system.
- Relevant Master’s level or higher qualification in archaeology or substantial experience in the commercial archaeological sector equivalent to this level.
- Working knowledge of the planning process (including EIA) and relevant environmental / heritage legislation, policy and guidance.
- Knowledge of the consenting process for listed buildings and scheduled monuments.
- Willingness to work across the UK and internationally as required.
- Full clean UK driving licence and Health and Safety awareness and experience on archaeological projects.
- Member of Institute for Archaeologists at least at Associate level or above of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA).
- Experience in a commercial consultancy environment.
- Capability to work under pressure, meet critical deadlines and innovate in approach to archaeological and heritage matters.
- Technical or specialist subject expertise (periods, themes, environmental or other post‑excavation specialisms and outreach).
