The Anaesthetics Department at Dorset County NHS Foundation Trust has a vacancy for a Specialty Doctor.

The successful applicant will join an established, successful, enthusiastic and ACSA accredited team delivering quality anaesthetic, perioperative and critical care services to the West Dorset population. This includes anaesthetic support for surgical teams in orthopaedics, vascular, ophthalmology, maxillofacial, obstetrics & gynaecology, urology, colorectal, general surgery, radiology suite, endoscopy unit and the Intensive Care Unit at DCH.

Main duties of the job

The timetable will be flexible; the post holder will be rostered for up to 20 hours per week as a combination of elective surgical lists (5 hours each), obstetrics cover and on call commitments—1st (Critical Care) or 2nd (Theatre and Obstetrics) on call tiers as required (12 hour shifts). The rota is on an 8‑week rolling basis with approximately 36 lists of variable surgical specialities over an 8‑week period in addition to on‑call commitment. Specialist interests and regular commitments may be accommodated. The post holder will have the opportunity of an attached training list each week.

Timetable includes a minimum of one SPA for CPD, supported by the Trust in accordance with current College requirements.

Person Specification

Education

  • Medical Degree (Full GMC licence required)
  • APLS / ATLS / ALS Certification
  • Postgraduate training in anaesthesia is desirable

Experience

  • Evidence of good oral and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of case mix and numbers anaesthetised.
  • Experience of multidisciplinary working.
  • Clinical experience in anaesthetics and critical care.
  • Initial assessment of competence in obstetric anaesthesia.
  • Recent and significant UK experience.

Skills and Ability

  • Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual, multi‑professional and team basis with all staff levels.
  • Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies.

AUDIT

  • Knowledge of medical and clinical audit principles and evidence of direct involvement in medical audit in the last 18 months.

Research

  • Knowledge of principles of scientific research.
