Urology Specialty Doctor – North Cheshire and Mersey NHS Foundation Trust (WHH)

We are looking to appoint a Urology Specialty doctor to join our team of 5 Urology Consultants. The team will consist of 5 substantive Consultants, 1 Locum Consultant and 4 Specialty doctors.
In addition, there are specialist Urology nurses and Clinical Nurse specialists.
The Urology team are forward thinking and work together to support our patients. There are various transformation projects currently being undertaken to redesign patient pathways, increase efficiency and improve patient outcomes and experience.
The Consultants are committed to learning and development of middle grade doctors.
Main duties of the job
This is an exciting time to join the team due to the transformational projects that are currently taking place.
The post includes delivery of outpatient clinics in a supportive role to the consultants and may include independent delivery of clinics dependent on level of experience and skill.
The post will include theatre sessions to support the consultants and develop individual learning.
Training will be provided to support independent working in certain areas.
Active participation in clinical governance and audit will be encouraged and supported.
- Responsibilities for the posts will include supporting provision of emergency and elective activity in the department. The post holders will be encouraged to develop sub‑specialty interests of their own which will be supported by the CBU to ensure job satisfaction and sustainability of services. There will be opportunities for training and development.
- The successful applicant will be responsible to the 5 Urology Consultants.
- The post holder will provide a comprehensive outpatient service supporting the Consultants with new and follow‑up clinics.
- It is expected that the post‑holder will provide services across all sites, Warrington, Halton and CSTM. Outpatient clinics are held in both Warrington and Halton Hospital outpatient departments.
- Theatre sessions are held over two sites. Diagnostic flexible cystoscopies are carried out in the UIU department. Independent flexi cystoscopy lists will be encouraged and training and development provided.
- The post holder would be expected to support the Urology Consultant in theatre sessions and may have independent lists dependent on experience and skill.
- There is a purpose‑built Urology Investigations Unit on the Warrington site where many urological procedures and hot clinics are undertaken. Independent sessions will be undertaken at the UIU, supported by a team of specialist nurses.
- All specialty doctors are part of the Tier 2 on‑call rota, with a 1:4 weekday and weekend cover. The on‑call rota will include prospective cover.
- Ward rounds and peri‑operative visits are expected during on call and high‑quality documentation is expected.
- Clinical audit is expected, and the meetings occur each month and attendance at monthly clinical governance meetings is mandatory.
- There are weekly MDT meetings on MS Teams.
- There is a 3‑tier on call rota (foundation doctor, speciality doctor, consultant). This post will provide tier 2 with a 1:4 rota. Out of hours and at weekends, on‑call provision is non‑resident but often requires attendance at the hospital.
Job Plans will be reviewed with the CBU Manager and Clinical Director 3 months after commencing the post and annually thereafter or at any time the appointee requests and adjusted accordingly to the agreement of both parties.

- Clinical expertise – capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge & judgement & prioritise clinical need. Demonstrates appropriate technical competence with potential for developing strong/complex clinical/diagnostic skills
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients.
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the management of acute medical emergencies.
