The Vale Youth Service is a part of the Learning and Skills Directorate of the Vale of Glamorgan Council. We support young people aged 11‑25 through informal and non‑formal educational opportunities to support them in achieving their full potential. We provide safe environments for young people to enjoy themselves and meet others; feel valued; access information and support; and learn new skills.

About the Role
Pay Details: One post is available. Appointment will be made at one of the following grades depending on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience: Youth Engagement Worker JNC Point 12 £30,745 per annum (pro rata) £15.97 p/h; Assistant Youth Engagement Worker JNC Point 9 £27,817 per annum (pro rata) £14.45 p/h.
Hours of Work / Working Pattern: 16 hours per week, 40 weeks per year, working a mix of daytime, evening and occasional weekend sessions to support engagement with post‑16 learners and young people approaching post‑16 transition.
Main Place of Work: Office base at Civic Offices, Barry. With travel to schools, sixth forms, post‑16 settings and youth provisions located across the Vale of Glamorgan but you will be able to share transport, use Council’s pool cars and/or claim travel expenses.
Temporary Reason: Temporarily funded until 31st March 2027 as part of a post‑16 NEET prevention pilot, aligned to the Medr Learner Recovery and Progression Funding 2026/27 and the Youth Engagement and Progression Framework.
We are looking for a colleague to join the youth service to support our growing post‑16 offer, providing targeted youth work and early intervention to young people who are post‑16, or approaching post‑16 transition, and who are at risk of becoming NEET.
- Engage post‑16 learners in school, sixth form, college and community settings.
- Support young people at risk of becoming NEET, including 1‑to‑1 and small‑group work.
- Design accredited and non‑accredited learning that supports employability, confidence and post‑16 progression.
- Apply knowledge of issues affecting young people such as housing, money management and health & wellbeing.
This is one post for 16 hours per week, working term‑time plus the first week of the summer school holiday.

About You
You Will Need
- Experience of working with children and/or young people, including post‑16 learners or those approaching post‑16 transition.
- Be familiar with tools and techniques used for gathering information and feedback from young people.
- Experience of facilitating group sessions or supporting group activities and discussions with young people.
- An awareness of issues affecting young people, including challenges associated with post‑16 transition and engagement in education, employment or training.
- Skills to create or adapt resources and materials that support engagement, confidence, participation and progression.
- A recognised qualification in Youth and Community Work, minimum Level 2 (or aiming to work towards within 2 years) if appointed as Assistant Youth Engagement Worker, or minimum Level 3 (or working towards) if appointed as Youth Engagement Worker.
- The candidate should have the appropriate registration with the Education Workforce Council (EWC) as a Youth Support Worker or Youth Worker unless working towards a qualification.
- Ability to travel throughout the Vale of Glamorgan or between locations as appropriate. A valid UK driving licence is desirable.
These qualifications and experiences are important for ensuring that the postholder is well‑prepared to engage with post‑16 young people effectively, support those at risk of becoming NEET, and contribute positively to their development, progression and wellbeing.
