Overview

An exciting and rare opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Neonatal Nurse to join our Neonatal Surgical Outreach Service as a Senior Clinical Nurse Specialist. This key Band 7 role provides clinical leadership and expert specialist care for infants and families requiring neonatal surgical care across the neonatal service, Children’s Hospital and community setting. The post holder will support babies and families throughout the full surgical pathway, from ante‑natal counselling and planning, through inpatient admission, transition to paediatrics, repatriation to local hospitals, discharge and follow‑up in the community. The role involves holding a defined clinical caseload and working autonomously within an agreed scope of competence and professional practice, requiring extensive neonatal surgical knowledge, expertise and sound clinical judgement. Working closely with neonatal, paediatric and surgical teams, the paediatric colorectal team, wider MDT, allied health professional teams and community and primary care services, you will lead and support the continued development of care pathways that improve patient flow, reduce avoidable delays to transfer and discharge, enhance repatriation and discharge planning, and improve parent experience and patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the surgical outreach service, analysing and scoping to continually develop the service.
  • Lead and manage projects in conjunction with the service.
  • Support babies and families throughout the full surgical pathway, from ante‑natal counselling and planning to discharge and follow‑up in the community.
  • Provide education, teaching and training to parents and carers to facilitate timely transfers or discharges.
  • Collaborate and build relationships with MDT teams.
  • Act as a source of specialty expertise to parents and carers, neonatal and paediatric surgical outreach and the neonatal and paediatric ward teams.
  • Participate in planning and implementation of quality initiatives and targets, in conjunction with the MDT team.
  • Initiate early discharge if appropriate to the patient.
  • Provide support for the transfer and discharge of neonates, facilitating follow‑up in the community.
  • Promote good communication and working relationships with the other leads of the service.
  • Drive and hold a current driving licence.

Qualifications

  • Band 7 clinical nurse specialist level.
  • Extensive neonatal surgical knowledge and expertise.
  • Sound clinical judgement and ability to work autonomously within an agreed scope of competency.
  • Experience working with neonatal, paediatric, surgical and allied health multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong clinical leadership, communication and project management skills.
