As a Senior Claims Adjuster in the Energy, Construction and Crisis Management claims team, you will be joining as an integral part of the Markel London Market claims team. Reporting into the Claims Manager, you will be responsible for leading and driving claims forward in a proactive manner. You will primarily handle first party energy claims, including upstream, midstream, downstream and renewables claims. What you’ll be doing:

The role involves handling energy, construction and political violence claims in accordance with Markel's philosophy and regulatory requirements, driving a customer‑focused approach, and working closely with the underwriting team and our external service providers and claims brokers. The successful candidate will also be responsible for developing the junior talent in our team, contributing to team objectives, and assisting with ad hoc projects.

You will be producing good quality and informative narratives and information on key claims and claims developments and analysing data to enhance underwriting capabilities. You will be assisting underwriters with policy language development. You will work closely with the underwriting team, including providing feedback on claims experiences, contract wordings, claims data or feedback for any renewal or new business and interacting with placing and claims brokers to develop positive relationships and knowledge about the quality of our claims management at Markel. While also working collaboratively with our actuarial and outwards reinsurance teams, ensuring that they are all apprised of new notifications and significant developments.

You will be willing to lead claims on all classes of business handled by the team, including attending and presenting at underwriting meetings, learning about the class and developing relationships with key stakeholders in the claims handling process.

Key Skills:

  • Demonstrable experience of leading and management of strategy on a portfolio of energy, construction and or political violence claims, including complex and/or high value claims.
  • Ability to identify and discuss the most common areas, trends in claims causation and analyse the portfolio to assist in profitability of the portfolio.
  • Confidently analysing and interpreting data to improve underwriting capabilities.
  • Understand customer needs and actively solicit and act upon feedback, providing solutions to problems.
  • Ability to gain strong understanding of underwriting and claims business plans and how claims actions impact overall company performance.
  • Experience mentoring and developing junior members of the claims team.
  • Background and knowledge in first party energy claims is required. Specific knowledge in political violence and construction claims is preferred but not essential.
  • You will have achieved ACII accreditation (or an equivalent professional qualification), or be working towards it.
