About the Organisation
Public Services Delivery Scotland (PSD Scotland) is a national organisation formed from the merger of NHS National Services Scotland and NHS Education for Scotland, aiming to support the renewal and long‑term sustainability of health and care services across Scotland.
The Post
As part of the IT Strategic Business Unit, the PSD Scotland Infrastructure services team has direct responsibility for more than 250 applications, both on‑premises and in the public cloud, handling over 100 million records annually. The Infrastructure Server team maintains and supports existing platforms and researches emerging technologies to recommend future direction. The team is split into four areas of expertise – Microsoft, Unix, Cloud and Oracle Database Administration.
We are seeking an experienced professional to join the DBA team as one of three Oracle and two SQL Server database administrators, responsible for supporting and maintaining over 80 production and approximately 150 test and development databases.
Database Platforms
PSD Scotland hosts Oracle databases ranging from version 11g to 19c on a mix of physical and virtual platforms, Linux and Solaris, including an Exadata cluster on Oracle’s OCI cloud. SQL Server databases run on a SQL Server 19 HA cluster on Windows 2022. The organisation also manages a large Azure subscription that hosts SQL Server SaaS deployments; currently, no Oracle databases are deployed in Azure but this may change soon.
Candidates should have experience supporting Oracle databases from version 11.2 onwards and/or SQL Server 2019.
Tasks Will Include
- Perform routine administration tasks including installing software, creating and upgrading databases, managing users and security, database backup and recovery, monitoring, and performance tuning.
- Provide technical support to users across PSD Scotland, resolving problems within agreed timescales by using an analytical approach to identify causes and prevent recurrence.
- Manage the progression of multiple tasks where unexpected events such as virus attacks or system failures may require task switches without warning.
- Ensure departmental standard operating procedures (SOPs) and standards are followed.
- Liaise with business users to gather information on technical requirements or issues and provide clear technical advice.
- Stay up to date with new and emerging technologies through research and development as required.
- Collaborate closely with colleagues in the IT department and with third‑party suppliers to optimise service delivery, ensuring two‑way communication and understanding of technical issues; the team operates within an ITIL service management framework.
Qualifications
Applicants should hold a degree level or equivalent qualification. An appreciation of PSD Scotland’s business requirements and strong customer‑relation skills are desirable.
Location and Working Pattern
Gyle Square, Edinburgh or Delta House, Glasgow. Hybrid working is currently in place. The role is Monday to Friday, 36 hours per week. It is a condition of employment that you must live and remain a resident within the UK and have entitlement to work in the UK for this post.
Benefits
The benefits package includes a pension scheme, comprehensive work‑life balance policies, occupational health services, learning resource centres, and discounted leisure, financial and shopping benefits.
