The role

Lead the development and communication of United Utilities’ understanding of current wastewater network capacity, including hydraulic performance and connectivity across the region.

Strengthen insight into future wastewater flows and loads within the network, identifying areas of potential capacity constraints or opportunities for growth that may require strategic investment.

Develop industry leading tools, processes and templates to enable delivery of the plan.

Technical lead for sections of the Drainage and Wastewater Management Plan (DWMP) and the integration of this into strategy development.

Key accountabilities

  • Technical lead for the wastewater network and environmental aspects of the Drainage and Wastewater Management Plan (DWMP).
  • To identify required scenarios to be tested as part of the DWMP process to ensure the business has a thorough understanding of long‑term risk.
  • To develop drainage and wastewater capacity model capability associated with producing DWMPs.
  • To influence the industry's approach to wastewater network capacity forecasting and demand planning.
  • Responsible for horizon scanning within the function to understand the risk and opportunities for the DWMP.
  • Owner of core DWMP documents and data tables.
  • Development of Price Review content, which includes chapter content, designing performance commitments and preparing cost adjustment claims.
  • Sponsor projects relating to development of technical tools and research for DWMP e.g. models, surveys
  • Identification and development of options and long‑term strategies to address identified service gaps including cost and benefit information

Skills & experience

  • A degree or post graduate qualification in a science or environmental discipline or have significant relevant experience in operational management of the wastewater system.
  • Demonstrate strategic thinking at all levels of the business.
  • Knowledge of wastewater network operations, modelling, DWMP, price review processes and environmental assessments.
  • Thorough understanding of the impact of wastewater activities on our customers and key stakeholders.
  • Excellent analytical reasoning skills.
  • Well‑developed interpersonal and communications skills with experience of planning and delivering effective communications strategies and directing work.
  • Maintain their knowledge and skills to be able to develop themselves within their role.
