We are launching a new five‑year strategy in July 2026, undertaking a major brand relaunch, progressing a significant digital transformation programme, and building out our policy and campaigns capability. Together, these represent a genuine opportunity to redefine how we engage with members, influence the healthcare agenda, and communicate the value and impact of surgery to wider audiences.

Reporting to the Executive Director of External Affairs and Engagement, the Director of Communications will lead a broad, high‑performing function spanning communications, media, campaigns, marketing, publishing and policy alignment. You will act as a trusted strategic adviser to the President, Officers and Executive Team, providing counsel on complex, sensitive and high‑profile issues and ensuring the College speaks with clarity, authority and confidence to members, policymakers, media and the public. You will also play a key role in establishing our new policy and campaigns functions, ensuring our work is solutions‑focused, evidence‑based and directly connected to the experiences of our members.

You will bring a proven track record in senior communications leadership, ideally gained within a complex or regulated environment, along with demonstrable experience developing and delivering integrated communications strategies across multiple audiences and channels. Strong government relations and public affairs expertise is essential, as is experience stewarding an organisational brand, ensuring consistency, credibility and impact across all channels. We are looking for someone with excellent media relations skills, both proactive and reactive, and a deep understanding of the UK healthcare landscape, including its policy, regulatory and political environment. You will have the judgement to navigate sensitive issues with confidence, the resilience to operate within a complex structure, and the interpersonal skills to build trust at the most senior levels.
