Registered Nursing Associate

We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic and innovative Nursing Associate to join our Older Adult Mental Health Inpatient service on Woodland Ward at the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust.

Position: Full‑time permanent.

Working pattern: 3–4 long days/ shift (07:30–20:00 / 19:30–08:00) across a four‑week period, including weekends and bank holidays.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Welcoming newly qualified and experienced Nursing Associates.
  • Communicating effectively with everyone at all levels.
  • Managing own named patients, evaluating care plans and working autonomously.
  • Problem‑solving, delegating, coordinating and managing time effectively.
  • Exhibiting excellent communication, interpersonal skills and a flexible, responsive approach.
  • Providing leadership, supervision, monitoring and education to junior staff, students and learners.
  • Conducting assessments of mental health needs, risk management and care planning using SBAR.
  • Liaising with community mental health, Hospital at Home, Mental Health Liaison and Acute Trust services.
  • Maintaining high standards of patient care, ensuring individuality, privacy, and confidentiality.
  • Adhering to the NMC code and all Trust policies and procedures.

Skills & Abilities

  • Clear and effective communication in English, verbal and written.
  • Assessing, planning and evaluating programmes of care.
  • Working effectively as a team member.
  • Using initiative and making decisions.
  • Maintaining clear, legible documentation.
  • Participating in reflective practice and clinical supervision.
  • Supporting, supervising, assessing and acting as a role model for students and other staff.

Qualifications

  • NMC Nursing Associate registration.
  • GCSE English (grade A‑C) or equivalent.
  • GCSE Maths (grade A‑C) or equivalent.
  • Original certificates will be requested at the point of offer.

Additional Criteria

  • Ability to carry out the physical requirements of the role, including using mechanical hoists to move patients.

Knowledge

  • Understanding of the NMC Code of Conduct.
  • Knowledge of the ageing process and related mental and physical health problems.
  • Knowledge of individual responsibilities towards health and safety.
  • Understanding the role of the Nursing Associate in the context of the nursing and interdisciplinary team, and how the role may contribute to service development.
  • Knowing when to seek advice and escalating to the appropriate professional.

Experience

  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams under appropriate supervision as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Experience prioritising one's own workload.
  • Experience working without direct supervision.
