Location: Colchester (Site-based) Department: Quality Reporting to: QC & IMS Leader

At Woods, we care for your air while protecting the environment. As leaders in air technology, we deliver innovative, energy‑efficient solutions that improve comfort, safety and performance for our customers worldwide.

We’re now looking for an experienced Metrology Engineer to take ownership of measurement capability across our Colchester site, playing a critical role in ensuring our products meet exacting quality and dimensional standards in a high‑volume manufacturing environment.

The Role

Reporting to the QC & IMS Leader, you’ll lead gauge control, calibration, measurement systems analysis (MSA) and dimensional verification, ensuring robust, capable measurement systems that support both day‑to‑day production and continuous improvement.

You’ll work closely with Quality, Manufacturing Engineering, Design and Operations to drive confidence in data, reduce variation and support investigation and resolution of dimensional non‑conformities.

Key Responsibilities

Gauge Control & Calibration

  • Develop, maintain and improve the site’s Gauge Management System, fully traceable to national standards
  • Define acceptance criteria, quarantine processes and corrective actions for out‑of‑tolerance equipment
  • Manage the full gauge lifecycle: selection, commissioning, verification, maintenance, storage and retirement

Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA)

  • Lead MSA studies (GR&R, bias, linearity, stability) for critical characteristics and CTQs
  • Coach engineers and operators on MSA planning, study design and interpretation
  • Drive improvements to poor performing measurement systems

Coordinate Measuring Equipment

  • Program and operate CMMs using PC‑DMIS, including 3D scanning and Romer Arm measurement
  • Develop and validate measurement routines in line with design intent and MSA requirements
  • Produce clear, meaningful metrology and dimensional reports

Continuous Improvement & Problem Solving

  • Support root cause analysis of dimensional issues and define effective containment and verification plans
  • Lead metrology‑related technology improvements aligned to site and investment strategies

Training & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Train operators, technicians and engineers in measurement techniques, gauge usage and MSA fundamentals
  • Partner with internal teams and suppliers/customers to align on measurement methods and acceptance criteria
  • Prepare and present metrics and improvement plans to leadership

About You

You’ll be an organised, analytical and hands‑on metrology professional with experience in volume manufacturing, confident working at both operational and systems level.

You’ll Bring

  • Degree / HNC / HND in Mechanical, Manufacturing or Metrology Engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • Strong experience in CMM programming, MSA leadership and dimensional verification
  • Solid understanding of GD&T, measurement uncertainty and calibration control
  • Working knowledge of ISO standards (including ISO 9001, ISO 10360, ISO 15530)
  • Experience working with UKAS‑accredited calibration providers and audit environments
  • Familiarity with APQP / PPAP or Inspection & Test Plans
  • Confidence using Microsoft Office, ERP systems (e.g. SAP, Oracle, Dynamics 365) and quality databases

Why Join Woods?
