Senior Clinical Fellow in Geriatrics – Newark Hospital

Newark Hospital is a small, non‑acute general hospital serving its local population. The in‑patient services are provided by the Geriatrics and General Medicine Consultants, with two wards: Sconce Ward and Castle Ward. The post holder will support the provision of high‑quality patient care and continuous improvement, working within a 7‑week rota that includes weekends and night shifts.
Main duties
- Provide a comprehensive medical service to inpatients, undertaking ward work and conducting outpatient clinics under the supervision of the appropriate Consultant.
- Establish and maintain liaison with users of the service including local General Practitioners and other external agencies.
- Perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
- Actively participate in audit, teaching, and research activities within the department.
- Liaise with the multidisciplinary team regarding patient care.
- Occasionally perform similar duties at other hospitals within the Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
- Perform administrative work such as discharge summaries and letters/reports within prescribed timescales.
- Comply with Royal College requirements for CME and participate in the Trust’s appraisal system.
- Deputise from time to time for absent colleagues, as required.
Qualifications
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and licence to practise.
- Have completed 2 of the 3 parts of MRCP.
- Full MRCP.
Experience
- Completed at least 4 years full‑time regular hospital service at Specialty Registrar – Year 1 or 2 / F2 level or higher grade with at least 4 months in Geriatrics and at least 4 months of registrar‑level experience of general medicine on calls within the UK.
- Previous experience in a multidisciplinary setting.
- Experience of working at a registrar level in geriatric medicine.
Teaching
- Experience with audit, teaching or research/critical review of literature.
Other skills
- Good communication skills, both oral and written.
- Organised with work.
- Clear reasoning and diagnostic skills.
- Confidentiality essential.
- Ability to seek and give advice when necessary.
- Tactful and diplomatic.
