Let's be honest. Surveying in the South West is one of the best-kept secrets in the profession.
Stunning countryside. Characterful properties. Coastal towns. Ancient cottages that have absolutely no idea what a damp-proof course is.
And yet – there are barely enough surveyors down here to go around.
That's where you come in.
Who we are
McCluskey Chartered Surveyors is a RICS-regulated, family-run practice operating across Devon and Somerset. We're small enough that your name actually means something here, and growing fast enough that your work genuinely shapes where we're headed.
We believe surveying is about more than condition ratings and traffic lights. It's about the person on the other end of that report – the first-time buyer who has no idea what a lintel is, the family putting everything into a Victorian terrace. We help people make one of the biggest decisions of their lives with confidence. That matters to us. A lot.
We're not a corporate machine. There's a team, a culture, and – yes – the occasional very strong opinion about cavity wall insulation.
The role
We're looking for an experienced Residential Surveyor to join the team, covering our patch from Plymouth across to Taunton and beyond. (Right now, we’re specifically looking for someone in and around South Devon).
You'll be conducting:
- RICS Level 2 Home Surveys (essential — this is the bread and butter)
- RICS Level 3 Home Surveys (highly desirable — if this is you, we really want to hear from you)
- A range of other bespoke surveys, giving you the opportunity to expand your building pathology knowledge
What you’ll need
- AssocRICS or MRICS accreditation with solid, hands‑on residential surveying experience
- No red-book valuations required
- Full UK driving licence
- Right to work in the UK
- Comfortable with a DBS check
What you get
The kit: Protimeter MMS3, drone, borescope, crack gauge callipers, iPhone, iPad, MacBook. We take the tools seriously so you can too.
The support: dedicated office backup handling bookings and admin – so you can focus on the surveys, not the spreadsheets.
The flexibility: full-time or part-time, with schedules that bend around real life (yes, the school play counts).
The extras: 20 days annual leave + bank holidays + your birthday off. Because honestly, working on your birthday should be illegal.
The salary: Competitive and experience-dependent – we'd rather talk to the right person and figure it out together – let’s have a conversation.
