Overview
The Lead Engineer will be part of a highly motivated dynamic team of engineers. The role involves leading the design and development of modelling techniques for HVDC systems, mentoring engineers and contributing to industry standards. The position also encompasses development and maintenance of control and protection system application software for LCC and VSC HVDC schemes following full SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle).
Responsibilities
- Lead and take ownership of the design and development of modelling and control techniques in both time- and frequency-domain to satisfy the needs of the HVDC market.
- Lead and take ownership of the development of requirement, design and test specifications for Control & Protection Application.
- Lead design and development of event and rate driven application software for control and protection systems.
- Lead and take ownership of the validation efforts with high-fidelity computer models in Model-in-the-Loop (MIL), Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL), using tools such as MATLAB / Simulink, PSCAD and RSCAD.
- Apply prior experience and on-the-job training to solve problems, proposing solutions with in-depth knowledge of a technical discipline, analytical thinking, and technical experience.
- Proficient in identifying and resolving underlying issues through root cause analysis (RCA).
- Lead team members on Git, Jira and Confluence for version control, task/defect management and documentation.
- Collaborate across teams to understand that control software development is not a standalone academic exercise.
- Demonstrate curiosity and the ability to explain and understand individual contributions within the bigger system.
- Show interest in real grids and real operating conditions with an emphasis on long-term learning over short-term results.
Qualifications / Essential Requirements
- Engineering degree in Computer Science or power systems and power electronics subjects, or proven equivalent knowledge and experience in HVDC business.
- Proven knowledge in power system modelling, control principles and algorithms used in the VSC and LCC HVDC technologies.
- Knowledge of HVDC system design, control and protection, including component-level interactions and considerations in HVDC schemes.
- Working knowledge of MATLAB / Simulink for control development.
- Competent with functional characteristics of power systems and interactions between AC and HVDC systems.
- Familiar with Agile software development practices and basics of Git for version control.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and a can-do attitude.
