Hours per week: 24
Contract type: Permanent
Salary: £30,024 – £32,597 a year pro rata
About The Job
As a Disability Family Intervention Worker at Luton Borough Council, you will play a vital role in supporting children and young people with disabilities and their families to achieve positive, sustainable outcomes. You will work as part of a dedicated team within the Short Breaks Hub, delivering high‑quality, child‑centred interventions across a range of settings, including the London Road Resource Centre, family homes, and the local community.
This dynamic and rewarding role combines direct practice with multi‑agency collaboration. You will undertake regular direct work with children, young people and their families, managing risk appropriately while ensuring the child’s voice is consistently heard, valued and acted upon. You will co‑produce and co‑deliver tailored support packages alongside partner agencies, building strong, solution‑focused working relationships based on clear agreements with families.
You will design and implement targeted interventions to strengthen parenting skills, build self‑confidence, and support families to manage challenging behaviours and complex health‑care needs. This includes working sensitively with issues such as parental mental health, child development and parenting capacity. Through skilled assessment and purposeful intervention, you will empower parents to recognise and build on their strengths, strengthening relationships and promoting improved outcomes for children.
A key aspect of the role involves contributing to and leading individual and group programmes such as parenting and early‑years support, play sessions and communication and behaviour workshops. You will monitor and evaluate progress, measuring how resilience is developing within the family and how parental capacity is improving over time. You will also undertake carers’ assessments and mental capacity assessments within agreed timescales.
Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of children and young people is central to this role. You will work in line with the Council’s Safeguarding Policy, manage risk effectively and respond confidently to challenging behaviours. You will also support managers in achieving operational objectives within the Short Breaks Hub and take the lead on shift when required.
Beyond direct delivery, you will actively seek out and develop new community‑based resources, strengthen partnerships with local and regional stakeholders and champion co‑production in service design and delivery. This role offers the opportunity to develop specialist expertise in an agreed area of family support while making a meaningful difference to the lives of children with disabilities and their families in Luton.
This role does not attract sponsorship.
About You
You have proven experience of working directly with children, young people and families within a social care, education or health setting, including work in family homes. You are confident in engaging families in a respectful, strengths‑based way and building effective partnerships that enable planned interventions to be agreed and successfully delivered.
You have demonstrable experience maintaining accurate and up‑to‑date case records, using IT systems to record work daily and produce clear, concise reports. Strong literacy and numeracy skills are essential, along with the ability to analyse and assess needs collaboratively with families, translating assessments into focused plans, measurable targets and professional reports that prioritise the safety and wellbeing of children.
You are organised and self‑motivated, able to manage and prioritise a diverse workload effectively while working both independently and as part of a team. You can make sound, needs‑led decisions that promote safe outcomes for children and young people, and you are confident participating in decision‑making processes where child protection and family support are paramount.
Your experience includes implementing and reviewing care programmes, as well as planning and undertaking carers’ assessments and mental capacity assessments within required timescales. You understand the importance of safeguarding practice and demonstrate a strong working knowledge of the key principles of the Children Act 1989 and related statutory guidance.
You also have a solid understanding of child and human development, and of the impact that deprivation, discrimination and abuse can have on children’s wellbeing and life chances. You recognise the importance of inclusive practice and are committed to delivering services that are equitable, respectful and culturally responsive.
A relevant qualification such as NVQ Level 3 in Childcare (or equivalent) is required, alongside training relevant to working with children and families. You must be able to work flexibly, including evenings and weekends when necessary, and travel effectively within the Borough and beyond. You will communicate clearly and confidently in spoken English, providing accurate information, guidance and support to children, families, colleagues and members of the public.
