Modulex designs, manufactures and supplies a comprehensive range of signage and display systems, including illuminated sign letters, totems, light boxes, wayfinding systems, sign trays and display frames. We work with trade signs customers across the UK.
We're now looking for a hands-on Operations Manager to take ownership of the day-to-day running of the business and help us scale.
The Operations Manager will be responsible for the smooth and profitable running of all operational activity across the business, from order intake and production planning through to fabrication, dispatch and after-sales. You'll lead the production team, optimise workflow, manage supplier relationships, and act as the bridge between sales, design and the workshop floor.
This is a critical hire for us. We need someone who genuinely understands signage manufacturing, the materials, the processes, the lead times, the commercial pressures and the customer expectations that come with this industry.
Production & Manufacturing
- Oversee the end-to-end production process
- Plan and schedule workshop capacity to meet promised lead times
- Drive efficiency, quality control and consistency across all manufactured output
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, reduce waste and increase margin
- Ensure all work is delivered to specification, on time and on budget
Team Leadership
- Lead, develop and motivate the production team
- Manage workshop staffing, rotas, training and performance
- Foster a culture of accountability, quality and continuous improvement
Supply Chain & Procurement
- Manage relationships with material suppliers
- Negotiate pricing and lead times; review and rationalise the supplier base
- Maintain appropriate stock levels without tying up unnecessary working capital
- Support ongoing initiatives around outsourced manufacturing partnerships, including overseas suppliers
Commercial & Customer
- Work closely with sales to ensure quotations are accurate, deliverable and profitable
- Resolve customer issues and escalations relating to delivery, quality or specification
- Contribute to pricing reviews and product margin analysis
- Support the design/estimating function with manufacturing input on new enquiries
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Maintain a safe, compliant and well-organised workshop environment
- Ensure adherence to all relevant H&S, electrical and product compliance standards
- Direct experience in the sign manufacturing industry — either from a production/operations role within a sign company, or from a commercial role (sales, project management, account management, estimating) within a sign business
- Strong working knowledge of common sign fabrication processes — fret cutting, fabrication of built-up letters, illumination (LED/halo/face-lit), light box assembly, powder coating, vinyl application and finishing
- Familiarity with materials used in signage: aluminium, acrylic, ACM/composites, stainless steel, LEDs and associated electrical components
- Proven experience managing people and production schedules
- Commercial awareness, understands margin, lead times, and what drives profitability in a bespoke manufacturing environment
- A practical, hands-on mindset — comfortable on the workshop floor, not just behind a desk
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to juggle multiple live jobs
- Confident communicator across shop floor, sales, suppliers and customers
- Commercially sharp, with a genuine interest in growing the business
- A pivotal role in a growing, established UK signage manufacturer
- Real autonomy and the opportunity to shape how the business operates
- Competitive salary, with scope to grow as the business does
