Wheelchair Field Engineer

We have an exciting opportunity for a Field Engineer to join our Wheelchair Service Team. You will be responsible for the delivery, collection, repair and maintenance of manual and electrically powered wheelchairs and associated equipment.
The post holder will be required to support workshop activities when not on the road, including refurbishment of wheelchairs and parts, de‑contamination, and scrapping of wheelchairs and parts.
All work must meet service specification standards and follow manufacturer instructions and training. The role is based within a workshop/warehouse at Red House, Hellesdon and the Re‑enablement Services Centre, Julian Hospital, Norwich.
You will be expected to cover on‑call wheelchair repairs 16:30‑21:00 Mon‑Fri and 9:00‑21:00 Sat‑Sun for 1 week every 4 weeks; this may change due to staff leave.
Main duties of the job
- Deliver, collect, repair, test, diagnose, modify and demonstrate to the client the electrically powered and manual wheelchairs, specialist buggies and associated equipment issued by the Wheelchair Assessment Centre, ensuring equipment is in safe working order.
- Work lone, generally liaising one‑to‑one with the patient in their own home; sometimes two team members may visit for safety/security of the patient or engineer.
- Provide technical information on the safe use of equipment to patients and carers, raising any safety/suitability concerns with the Wheelchair Assessment Centre.
- Provide technical advice to Admin colleagues to troubleshoot wheelchair faults, reducing the need for an engineer visit.
- Carry out a planned preventative maintenance programme on all wheelchairs on loan.
- Participate in an out‑of‑office hours on‑call service between 9 am and 9 pm throughout the week, including bank holidays, on a rotational basis.
- Frequently drive to attend activities across the county on a daily basis.
Experience
- Demonstrable background within electrical/mechanical engineering including 12 v/24 v systems.
- Previous experience of working in a healthcare setting.
- Previous experience in customer service.
- Previous experience in professional driving.
- Previous experience working with medical devices/wheelchairs.
Skills, ability and knowledge
- Basic IT skills including experience of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to kneel, bend, stoop and work in cramped environments if necessary.
- Ability to manually handle loads of up to 20 kg safely.
- Ability to perform diagnostics with and without diagnostic software.
- Knowledge of safeguarding protocols relating to adults and children.
- Professional manufacturer training relating to wheelchairs and associated equipment.
Communication
- Good written and verbal communication and reasoning skills.
- Good customer relations and interpersonal skills.
- Professional appearance.

Qualifications
- NVQ Level 4 or equivalent experience in either Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
- Previous maintenance experience with wheelchairs.
