Applications are invited for a locum post in Intensive Care Medicine at one of Europe’s leading hospital sites at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. Applicants who wish to undertake partner specialty work in anaesthesia and/or critical care transfer medicine will be welcome.

The posts will be based in the purpose built 46 bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Southmead Hospital, NBT. The successful applicants will join a team of 25 ICU Consultants and more than 40 ICU trainees. The ICU sits within the wider anaesthetic department of more than 80 Consultants.

This is an exciting period for the Unit as it takes forward its 5 year strategy and rolls out service improvements including the introduction of a Clinical Information System. The plans also include continued collaboration with its local Units through the newly formed Severn Sub-Regional Network of hospitals and also supporting the new Retrieve adult critical care transfer service.

Registration Requirements

Applicants are required to be on the Specialist Register for Intensive Care Medicine, or be within six months of obtaining it by the interview date. If partner specialty work is to be undertaken then applicants will be required to be on the Specialist Register for that partner specialty. Full Registration with the GMC is essential.

CESR applicants are welcome and must have their CESR in place at the time of the interview.

Main Duties

The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. The appointee will be required to reside no more than 30 minutes travelling time (by road) from the Southmead Hospital site for on-call purposes. The successful candidate will be employed under Terms & Conditions of Service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Qualifications

Essential

  • FFICM or equivalent
  • Full and unrestricted registration with GMC
  • CCT in Intensive Care Medicine and have been entered on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of the appointment (specialist registrars that do not hold a CCT must be due to be awarded one within 6 months of the interview date)

Desirable

  • Higher academic qualification (e.g. MD or MS)

Training and Experience

Essential

  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent)
  • Minimum of 7 years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training, three years as a Senior Registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential
  • Training in diagnosis and treatment of Conditions and subspecialties relevant to NBT patient mix

Desirable

  • Evidence of extensive experience in sub-specialties reflected in the job description
  • Expertise acquired during training that would augment existing and / or add novel expertise to the delivery of quality Critical Care at NBT

Further Training, Management, Audit

  • Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career
