About the Role

We are seeking a site‑based Environmental Advisor to join the Sizewell C Construction Delivery Team, supporting one of the UK’s most significant and complex infrastructure projects and contributing to the delivery of the next generation of nuclear power. The Environmental Advisor will be part of a dedicated environmental and sustainability team, working closely with the Construction Delivery Team and Tier 1 Contractors. The role focuses on ensuring environmental and sustainability requirements are effectively implemented, compliance is maintained with all regulatory consents and permits, and environmental performance is continually improved across the site.

Operating Environment

Operating within the constraints of the Development Consent Order (DCO) and associated environmental frameworks, permits, and consents, the post holder will work in a highly regulated environment subject to close scrutiny by regulators, stakeholders and the public. The role requires close collaboration with SZC Client Team representatives, contractors and service providers to ensure all environmental and sustainability obligations are met throughout construction delivery.

Framework & Boundaries

The project’s performance will be closely monitored by internal governance, regulators and external stakeholders, requiring the post holder to maintain a consistently high standard of environmental compliance, professionalism and integrity.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Provide clear written and verbal advice on environmental legislation, permits, consent conditions and planning constraints applicable to site activities.
  • Review contractors’ Environmental Management Plans (EMPs), Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) to ensure alignment with environmental legislation, Development Consent Order (DCO) requirements and SZC standards.
  • Support self‑assessment activities and internal audits, ensuring site operations comply with legal requirements, SZC procedures and environmental best practice.
  • Support and, where required, lead environmental incident investigations, including the production of reports and identification of corrective and preventative actions to avoid recurrence.
  • Identify potential contractual and environmental risks and escalate issues to the Environmental & Sustainability Manager in a proportionate and timely manner.
  • Promote positive environmental behaviours and support continuous improvement in environmental performance across construction teams.

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • Experience in an Environmental Management role on a dynamic, site‑based construction or industrial project.
  • Detailed knowledge of UK environmental legislation relevant to construction or industrial installations, including guidance, industry best practice and reference standards.
  • Understanding of the client/contractor relationship and legal responsibilities under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM).
  • Ability to work independently, demonstrating strong communication, interpersonal and influencing skills.
  • Degree qualified (or equivalent) in Environmental Management, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
  • Experience working within an Environmental Management System (EMS) aligned to recognised standards, such as BS EN ISO 14001.

Desirable

  • Experience on major infrastructure or nuclear projects.
  • Familiarity with DCO‑controlled projects or similarly regulated environments.
  • Experience engaging directly with regulators, auditors or client environmental teams.
