ENT Specialty Doctor

An opportunity has arisen to join the Department of Otolaryngology / Head & Neck Surgery at University Hospitals Bristol & Weston NHS Foundation Trust. We have 4 permanent positions available within the department & 1 fixed term 12 month contract position.
The job roles will comprise of otology, rhinology & Head and Neck outpatient clinics both face to face and telephone clinics, and will include theatre attendance.
The ENT service provides adult and paediatric outpatient and inpatient ENT activity at the major teaching hospital in Bristol, but also provides outreach clinics and inpatient support and advice across a range of other sites including Southmead Hospital and Weston General Hospital.
The Trust is the regional centre for otolaryngology, major head and neck surgery, skull base surgery, major ear surgery and hearing implantation.
The posts would suit a doctor who has completed core surgical training (or equivalent) and has experience in ENT.
It is also anticipated that the successful candidate will contribute to the academic, research and teaching aspects of the posts as it is based within the major regional teaching hospital.
Main duties of the job
Clinical duties
Clinical duties include outpatient clinics, operating and emergency care. These activities occur in the University Hospitals Bristol & Weston precinct and at Southmead Hospital NBT Trust, this post will require travel to all activity areas. The successful candidate will be expected to comply with all relevant Trust policies relating to administration of patient care.
Management and Leadership Responsibilities
The management responsibility of the post-holder will be to the departmental clinical lead and the Divisional Clinical Chair who is responsible to the Chief Executive and Trust Board.

Person Specification
Qualifications & Training
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practise MRCS or equivalent
- Evidence of sustained career progression and achievement in ENT, commensurate with time since primary medical qualification, including attainment of relevant competencies, qualifications, research or projects
- Primary Medical Degree MBChB or Equivalent
- Completion of MRCS, DOHNS (Diplomate of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery), or equivalent
- Higher degree MSc or PhD
- Formal qualifications in Medical Education (PG Cert/Dip/Masters)
Knowledge and Experience
- At least 2 years' experience as an SHO, or equivalent, in ENT
- Can demonstrate evidence of the knowledge of managing ENT emergencies, acute surgical emergencies and "ward-based" care of surgical patients
- Understands the principles of Clinical Governance and Patient Safety
- Can critically appraise research evidence and interpret national/local clinical guideline
- Experience as a registrar or equivalent in ENT Surgery
- Familiarity and experience of UK NHS systems and working
- Surgical experience, as proven by logbook, of performing ENT surgery as primary surgeon identifying synonyms for point
- Evidence of managing outpatient ENT case, with indirect supervision
- Completion of at least one closed loop audit or QI project demonstrating measurable improvement and reflective learning
- Evidence of research activity in ENT (e.g. presentations, peer reviewed publications, collaborative research roles), proportional to career stage
Skill and abilities
- Highly developed communication skills; ability to communicate complex information to patients and staff
- Experience in teaching medical students or junior colleagues
- Proficiency in clinical IT systems and maintaining accurate electronic patient records
- Capacity to recognise own limitations and develop appropriate coping mechanisms
- Evidence of advanced communication skills training
- Evidence of formal teaching roles or development of training courses/curriculum
- Evidence of proactively seeking feedback from colleagues and patients. Adapts behaviours and practice appropriately where necessary
