Design Manager – Main Contractor (Fit‑Out / Refurb / Structural)
Location: Central London
Salary: Up to £80,000 + package
About the role
We are working with a leading main contractor to appoint an experienced Design Manager to join their Central London team, supporting the delivery of complex, high‑profile projects across fit‑out, refurbishment, and structural (cut & carve) schemes. This is a key role within an established growing business, offering the opportunity to work on technically challenging projects with a strong emphasis on quality, detail, and client engagement.
Project scope
- CAT A & CAT B fit‑out
- Refurbishment and cut & carve projects
- Civils and structural elements within central London schemes
- Fast‑paced, detail‑driven environments with high client expectations
Key responsibilities
- Manage and coordinate the full design process across multiple project phases
- Liaise with consultants, subcontractors, and internal teams to ensure design deliverables align with programme requirements
- Review and challenge design information to ensure buildability, cost efficiency, and compliance
- Lead design meetings and maintain strong client engagement
- Work closely with commercial and construction teams to mitigate risk and resolve design issues proactively
- Ensure all design information is issued, tracked, and delivered in line with programme
Candidate requirements
- Proven experience as a Design Manager within a main contractor environment
- Ideally from a Tier 1 or leading Tier 2 contractor background
- Strong exposure to fit‑out (CAT A & CAT B), refurbishment, and structural/cut & carve projects
- Excellent understanding of buildability and construction sequencing
- Confident managing stakeholders and leading design coordination meetings
- Commercial awareness and ability to identify and manage design risk
- Proactive, detail‑oriented, and comfortable working in fast‑paced London projects
