Senior Rail Safety Consultant

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Rail Safety Engineer / Safety Risk Consultant to join a growing Safety, Risk & Reliability team delivering high-impact projects across the UK rail industry.
This role is ideal for professionals with strong rail safety assurance, risk assessment, and system safety engineering experience, particularly across complex, safety-critical rail systems. You will play a key role in delivering safety engineering solutions across a wide range of rail projects, from conventional systems to digital and emerging technologies.
Key Role Responsibilities
- Lead delivery of rail safety assurance activities, work packages, or small projects to time, cost, and quality.
- Perform and manage system safety engineering and risk assessment, including:
- HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Studies)
- FMECA (Failure Modes, Effects & Criticality Analysis)
- FTA (Fault Tree Analysis)
- Develop and review Safety Cases, Safety Justifications, and Safety Management Systems.
- Facilitate and chair safety workshops with clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Support projects across the full rail system lifecycle, including design, integration, testing, and operations.
- Provide safety assurance input for:
- Signalling & train control systems (ETCS, ERTMS, CBTC, interlockings)
- Rail infrastructure (track, civils, stations, depots, power systems)
- Rolling stock and integration
- Operations, maintenance, and system upgrades
- Interface with Independent Safety Assessors (ISA) / Assessment Bodies (AsBo) and support responses to findings.
- Support clients with modern rail challenges, including:
- Digital railway systems
- Decarbonisation and sustainability
- Climate resilience and adaptation
About You
- Chartered Engineer (or working towards) with a relevant professional institution.
- Proven experience in rail safety engineering / safety assurance within the UK rail sector.
- Strong knowledge of UK rail regulations and standards, including:
- ROGS (Railways and Other Guided Transport Systems Regulations)
- CSM-RA (Common Safety Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment)
- NTSNs / TSIs
- EN 50126, EN 50129, EN 50716
- Demonstrated experience delivering quantitative and qualitative risk assessments.
- Strong background in safety-critical, multidisciplinary rail systems.
- Experience working with or alongside ISA / AsBo organisations.
- Ability to work across multiple rail domains (signalling, infrastructure, rolling stock, operations).
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
- Experience on major rail programmes or digital railway projects.
