It exists to ensure that insurance cover is accurately and transparently reflected in all policy materials, aligning with underwriting intent, regulatory requirements, and commercial objectives.
The position plays a critical role in reducing contractual ambiguity and protecting against unintended coverage exposure, while enabling underwriting teams and distribution partners to achieve clear, fair, and commercially appropriate outcomes. It combines technical wordings expertise with stakeholder engagement across underwriting, claims, and external market participants.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review, negotiate, and agree policy wordings and related contractual documentation in a timely manner, maintaining strong technical expertise in insurance contracts and market practice
- Draft and refine policy wordings, clauses, summaries of cover, and related documentation to ensure clarity, consistency, and compliance with legal, regulatory, reinsurance, and internal governance standards
- Ensure policy documentation accurately reflects intended coverage and does not inadvertently extend scope beyond agreed terms
- Collaborate closely with underwriting teams and external partners to agree, finalise, and implement new or amended wordings
- Act as a technical referral point for wording-related queries, providing guidance, challenge, and expertise to underwriting colleagues
- Identify and address potential contractual or wording risks early, developing practical and commercially viable solutions
- Manage the progress of wording negotiations through to completion, maintaining accountability for open items with brokers and stakeholders
- Work with underwriting and claims teams to support consistent interpretation and application of policy wording
- Contribute to product development through market insight, analysis, and awareness of emerging trends
- Ensure documentation aligns with relevant regulatory frameworks, market standards, and governance requirements
- Support regulatory and conduct-related activities, including reviews, queries, and reporting requirements
- Maintain and improve internal wordings libraries, guidance materials, and documentation standards
- Participate in market forums, committees, and industry working groups where required
- Contribute to training, knowledge sharing, and capability development across underwriting and oversight teams
- Act as a role model demonstrating professionalism, accountability, collaboration, and integrity
What We're Looking For:
- Strong experience in insurance wordings, policy documentation, or contract drafting within a commercial insurance environment
- Deep understanding of insurance contract structure, coverage interpretation, and regulatory considerations
- Familiarity with London Market practices and broader international insurance frameworks
- Experience engaging with complex underwriting and/or regulatory environments
- Ability to balance legal, regulatory, and commercial considerations when making decisions
- Strong written communication skills with a high standard of drafting ability
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to identify and resolve ambiguity in complex documentation
- Confidence in interpreting policy intent and articulating decisions clearly to stakeholders
- Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills across internal and external parties
- Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and deliver to deadlines
- Strong understanding of underwriting and claims processes and their interaction with policy wording
Desirable but Not Essential:
- Experience working with non-admitted or multi-jurisdictional insurance structures
- Exposure to regulatory engagement or conduct risk frameworks
- Experience contributing to product development or underwriting innovation initiatives
- Previous involvement in market committees or industry working groups
- Experience developing internal technical guidance or training materials
