Head of Joint Design Office – Sizewell C

Reports to: SZC Technical Director
Purpose
Lead the creation and operation of the Joint Design Office (JDO) at Sizewell C, delivering site-based engineering support for construction and commissioning. Ensure all work meets safety, quality, time, and cost targets, while building and leading a high-performing, multi-disciplinary team.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement the JDO strategy and operating model, applying lessons from HPC and other EPR projects.
- Lead and manage a multi-disciplinary team (>100 FTE) from SZC, Responsible Designers, and supply chain partners.
- Oversee technical delivery, resolving engineering issues across design, procurement, construction, and commissioning.
- Monitor progress against milestones, budget (£350m EAC) and risks (~£100m), reporting to stakeholders.
- Maintain and approve nuclear safety case standards, ensuring compliance with UK regulatory requirements.
- Act as Intelligent Customer for design modifications and external technical work.
- Represent the Technical Director in delegated meetings and decisions (financial authority up to £500k).
- Degree in engineering or science discipline.
- Extensive nuclear industry experience (PWR preferred) in senior leadership roles.
- Proven record managing large-scale, safety-critical projects.
- Strong understanding of safety cases, UK regulatory environment, and technical standards.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience with budget control, cost management, and commercial decision-making.
