We are looking for a technically skilled, reliable, professional sonographer to work in our busy DGH. The role is primarily sonographer‑led with radiologist backup.

Responsibilities

  • Use ultrasound equipment to the best of your ability, ensuring the highest standards of image optimisation.
  • Justify and vet ultrasound requests.
  • Schedule inpatients at weekends/out of hours where appropriate.
  • Provide verbal and written reports on ultrasound examinations to referrers and other clinical staff.
  • Review existing policies and procedures and suggest alterations and improvements to improve workflow and quality of service.
  • Promote communication by attending and participating in departmental meetings.
  • Manage workloads efficiently and effectively.
  • Maintain familiarity with all software systems utilised within the department, report problems and communicate solutions with colleagues.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as and when requested by the Superintendent Sonographer or the Service Manager.
  • Undertake duties in a caring and professional manner.
  • Delegate duties where and when appropriate to ensure a strong team approach.
  • Provide a high quality, accurate and comprehensive ultrasound service to patients and referrers, undertaking all examinations for which adequate training has been given.
  • Perform consistently to high standards.
  • Identify and actively promote best practice.
  • Communicate verbally with patients during and after their examination, including providing appropriate details of their results (where appropriate and in accordance with departmental policies).

Qualifications and Requirements

  • PGCert or PG Dip in Medical Ultrasound from a recognised university.
  • Work experience as a sonographer in the NHS (or equivalent UK service) within the last 3 years.
  • Experience in obstetrics, gynaecology, general, small parts, musculoskeletal, and paediatrics ultrasound is desirable.
  • Good teaching skills to train radiology and obstetric registrars and support a rolling sonographer training programme.
  • Strong decision‑making skills, confidence to work independently and ability to be a good team player.
  • Ability and confidence to work alone, with strong reliability and professional conduct.
  • Good communication skills and a dynamic and flexible approach.
