About the Role

We are seeking Experienced Pit Top Men to support operations on major shaft sinking and tunnelling projects across the North West UK. This is a key role in ensuring the safe and efficient coordination of materials, personnel, and lifting operations at the top of the shaft.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage all pit top activities on shaft sinking projects
  • Supervise the movement of materials, equipment, and personnel in and out of the shaft
  • Work closely with crane drivers, banksmen, and slinger/signallers to ensure safe lifting operations
  • Ensure all operations are carried out in line with lifting plans and site procedures
  • Monitor and maintain safety at the shaft top, including barriers, exclusion zones, and access points
  • Conduct checks on equipment and report any defects or issues
  • Maintain clear communication with underground teams and site management
  • Uphold strict health, safety, and environmental standards at all times

Essential Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Pit Top Man on shaft sinking and/or tunnelling projects
  • Strong understanding of shaft operations, lifting procedures, and site coordination
  • Confined Spaces certification (High Risk) – essential
  • Valid medical certificate (safety-critical) – essential
  • Ability to work in a high‑risk, safety‑critical environment
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Willingness to work shifts, including nights and weekends

Desirable

  • Slinger/Signaller or Banksman ticket
  • CSCS card
  • First Aid certification
  • Experience on large‑scale civil engineering or underground infrastructure projects
