X4 Group is supporting a leading engineering consultancy in the search for a Principal Process Engineer to join their established water and wastewater team.

This is a key senior position, offering the opportunity to lead the delivery of complex infrastructure and environmental projects, while playing a central role in technical leadership, client engagement, and team development.

You will work across a diverse portfolio of projects, contributing to the development of sustainable and efficient treatment solutions across the full project lifecycle.

The Role

As a Principal Process Engineer, you will act as a technical authority within the team, leading process design activities and supporting both project delivery and strategic growth.

You will take ownership of key workstreams, ensuring high-quality outputs while collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams and clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead process engineering design across feasibility, concept, outline, and detailed design stages
  • Develop and review core process deliverables, including:
  • Block Flow Diagrams
  • P&IDs
  • Mass balances
  • Equipment sizing
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight across multiple projects
  • Undertake and review process modelling, analysis, and optimisation studies
  • Ensure quality and compliance through technical assurance and checking of deliverables
  • Produce and review high-quality technical reports, specifications, and client presentations
  • Act as a key point of contact for clients and stakeholders
  • Support and mentor junior and mid-level engineers
  • Contribute to resource planning and team capability development
  • Support business development activities, including tenders, proposals, and client engagement

Candidate Profile

Essential Requirements

  • Degree in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with a recognised professional institution
  • Extensive experience in water and/or wastewater treatment projects
  • Strong background in process design across all project stages
  • In-depth knowledge of treatment technologies and process engineering principles
  • Proven ability to lead technical delivery on complex projects
  • Experience in process optimisation and problem-solving
  • Strong technical report writing and review capabilities
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
