An opportunity has arisen for a Head of Shafts to join a major infrastructure programme in London, delivering a portfolio of complex heavy civils works within a Tier 1 principal contractor environment. This role will oversee delivery across four major projects (circa £200M each), including shaft construction, underground interfaces, reinforced concrete structures and associated civil works. While only one shaft involves excavation, the role requires broad experience across large-scale infrastructure delivery and multi-site management.
Responsibilities
- Leading delivery across multiple concurrent infrastructure projects and sites
- Overseeing works including shaft construction, deep excavations, RC structures, secondary lining and underground interfaces
- Managing Senior Project Managers and multidisciplinary delivery teams
- Ensuring alignment across design, pre-construction, construction and handover phases
- Driving performance across programme, cost, quality and safety metrics
- Acting as the escalation point for technical, commercial and delivery risks
- Managing interfaces between contractors, stakeholders and supply chain partners
- Embedding best practice in health, safety, quality and continuous improvement
Qualifications
- An engineering degree (civil, structural or related discipline)
Required Skills
- Proven experience delivering large-scale infrastructure or heavy civils projects (£100M–£200M+)
- Strong understanding of construction methodologies for complex civil engineering works
- Experience working within a Tier 1 / principal contractor environment
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple sites, packages or project portfolios
- Strong leadership capability with experience managing matrix teams and senior stakeholders
- Experience working under NEC contracts, with strong commercial awareness
Preferred Skills
- Experience on major UK programmes such as HS2, Crossrail, Tideway or similar is highly desirable.
