Software Engineering Manager – Data Engineering (9 Month FTC)

About this role

Capital One is looking for an experienced Software Engineering Manager to lead a team of eight Software Engineers in our Nottingham office, focusing on building and evolving our Data capabilities across the UK business and within our advanced Cloud-based Enterprise Data Ecosystem.

What you'll do

  • Lead a high-performing data engineering team: lead and empower eight Software Engineers to deliver high-quality, scalable, resilient data solutions at pace.
  • Champion people leadership and development: mentor engineers for personal and technical growth, driving a positive impact on their careers and business influence.
  • Drive technical excellence and architecture: provide strong technical leadership, maintain a high engineering bar, manage technical risks, and influence architectural direction.
  • Deliver the product roadmap: own deliveries and ways of working, partnering with Product and Change Delivery to shape the roadmap and ensure timely delivery of valuable data products in a complex regulatory environment.
  • Foster innovation and modern practices: encourage innovation, advocate for effective use of AI developer tooling and adhere to modern software development patterns and best practices.
  • Forge partnerships: build strong cross-functional relationships across Data Engineering and the wider UK/US Enterprise to provide the team with clear context and purpose.
  • Platform and application management: own the team's business applications and platforms, ensuring they remain well-managed, secure, and up-to-date, and provide effective incident support through your team.

What we're looking for

  • An approachable, inquisitive, problem-solving leader focused on business value and passionate about developing talent.
  • Comfortable with technology, architectural decisions, and technical trade-offs, backed by a previous background as an experienced software engineer.
  • Experience with data platform and ETL/orchestration technologies such as Apache Airflow, Spark, AWS Glue, and Snowflake.
  • Experience with (or strong advocacy for) AI developer tooling such as Claude Code, Copilot, Windsurf, and Gemini.
  • Proficiency in delivering solutions within a major Public Cloud service, such as AWS.
  • Experience operating within an Agile environment (e.g., Scrum) in a complex, regulated industry like Financial Services.
  • A strong sense of ownership, excellent communication skills, and a positive, proactive bias for action balanced with self-reflection.

We understand that great engineering managers may not have everything listed here, and that is OK. If you believe you can make a difference, lead a happy & high-performing engineering team and you have the drive to make a positive impact on the business, we’d love to hear from you.

Where and how you'll work

This is a 9 month fixed term position based in our Nottingham office.

We have a hybrid working model which gives you flexibility to work from our office and from home.

We’re big on collaboration and connection, so you’ll be based in our Nottingham office 3 days a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

What’s in it for you

  • Bring us all this – and you’ll be well rewarded with a role contributing to the roadmap of an organisation committed to transformation.
  • We offer high performers strong and diverse career progression, investing heavily in developing great people through our Capital One University training programmes (and appropriate external providers).
  • Immediate access to our core benefits including pension scheme, bonus, generous holiday entitlement and private medical insurance – with flexible benefits available including season-ticket loans, cycle to work scheme and enhanced parental leave.
  • Open-plan workspaces and accessible facilities designed to inspire and support you. Our Nottingham head-office has a fully-serviced gym, subsidised restaurant, mindfulness and music rooms.
