WSP’s Local Government team in Cardiff has a new opportunity to recruit a Head of Structural Engineering (Highways). This leadership position involves driving technical excellence, managing project delivery and mentoring a team of talented engineers.

As a senior member of the team, you will work collaboratively with local government clients across South Wales – ensuring the team meets and exceeds client expectations and maintains and develops client relationships. The role is varied, with a focus on highway structures such as bridges, culverts and retaining walls. You and your team will be involved in design, inspection, assessment and feasibility studies.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Lead and develop a team of structural engineers, maintaining a culture of collaboration and technical excellence.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to support professional development and chartership.
  • Act as a senior point of contact for clients, building strong relationships and ensuring satisfaction.
  • Lead on the design of bridges and other highway structures.
  • Lead on bridge strengthening, repairs, inspections and assessments.
  • Supervise and mentor colleagues, including developing professionals.
  • Finance and project manage schemes.

The role is based in WSP’s Cardiff office and operates a hybrid working model that allows a mix of in‑office and home working.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…

It is anticipated that you will be a Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer with experience that includes the following:

  • Extensive experience in bridge and highway structures design, assessment and project management, gained from working on construction sites and the design office.
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and deliver complex infrastructure projects.
  • Strong knowledge of UK highways standards and contract documentation (e.g. DMRB, NEC4).
  • Knowledge in design, maintenance and supervision of structures related projects with a track record of innovation in design and management of structures.
  • Experience in design or assessment of steel, reinforced and prestressed concrete bridge structures.
  • Strong communication and client relationship building skills, and willingness to adapt to new challenges and actively participate in the development of the wider team and strategy.
