The Opportunity
We’re partnering with a UK-based SaaS organisation to hire a Principal Web Engineer for a senior, hands-on individual contributor role. This position sits within a core product engineering team responsible for building and scaling a large, enterprise-grade SaaS platform.
This role is designed for someone who wants to work on the most complex and technically challenging problems across the web estate, shaping technical direction and standards without moving away from hands-on engineering.
The Team
You’ll join a highly collaborative product engineering team working with modern web technologies. The team partners closely with platform, architecture, and delivery functions and plays a key role in the continued growth of a business-critical SaaS product.
Your Impact
As a Principal Web Engineer, you’ll go beyond delivery alone. You’ll influence architecture, guide best practices, and raise engineering standards across the web discipline, while remaining deeply involved in design and development.
Although this is not a people-management role, you’ll act as a technical authority, coaching engineers, contributing to design decisions, and helping teams tackle complex business challenges. You’ll govern and contribute to the web codebase, driving improvements in technology, process, and ways of working to ensure long-term, sustainable delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with delivery, platform, and architecture teams to align the roadmap with high standards of quality and reliability
- Govern and actively contribute to the evolution of the web codebase through hands-on development
- Build proof of concepts to de-risk delivery and clarify complex technical ideas
- Champion clean code, automation, and strong test coverage
- Provide technical guidance during planning, design reviews, and incident management
- Influence best practices, tooling, and technology choices across the web discipline
- Support recruitment processes, including technical interviews
- Mentor and coach junior engineers, supporting their technical development
Experience Required
- Strong experience building modern enterprise-scale Angular applications
- Good knowledge of accessibility, responsive/adaptive design, and working from UX/UI designs
- Experience with web security and RESTful web services
- Strong understanding of RESTful architecture and API design
- Experience with modern unit testing frameworks
- Deep understanding of software engineering fundamentals (design patterns, SOLID principles, scalability)
- Proven ability to write clean, maintainable, and scalable code
- Cloud experience (Azure preferred)
- Experience contributing to or advising on design systems (e.g. Storybook)
