Job overview

As a member of the Speech and Language Therapy Team at Basildon Hospital, we will expect the postholder to follow the team ethos of keeping patients at the centre of everything we do. We always aim to provide person-centred care and treat everyone with dignity and compassion at all times.

You will be central to the service provided to Stroke patients on our Acute and Hyper-acute Stroke Unit – carrying out therapeutic interventions as planned by the Speech & Language Therapist and be responsible for providing feedback relating to patients progress, screening patients for communication and swallowing difficulties during their initial admission to Stroke ward, and supporting the Speech & Language Therapists in gathering information for initial assessment, troubleshooting messages and assisting in organising and facilitating group based education and some specific administration tasks.

As the role is not completely full-time, some flexibility in provision of times and days worked may be possible.

Previous experience as a speech and language therapy assistant, or similar role would be preferred.

Main duties of the job

Function as an advanced practitioner speech and language therapy assistant / support worker within the hospital, carrying out and progressing treatment plans set by qualified speech and language therapists to clients with speech and language difficulties/disorders and dysphagia.

Screen patients for potential communication and swallow issues, using a locally adapted screens, following training from qualified SALT and agreement of acquired competence.

Use your own initiative, where indicated, to progress care plans within limits set within a specific patients care plan document.

Help lead various patient therapy groups, as designated by an SALT.

Maintain and develop skills and knowledge to deliver a range of interventions and set an example of good practice to other team members including skill sharing.

Complete contemporaneous notes, within the guidelines of Trust policy, as relevant to role

You will complete administrative tasks as relevant to role, when administrator not available

Person specification

Qualifications

  • Must have pass grade GCSE or equivalent English and Maths
  • NVQ Level 4 Higher National Diplomas or equivalent

Knowledge and Experience

  • Understanding of the role of the Speech & Language Therapist and MDT
  • Organisational skills for administration and support of therapy staff
  • revious work experience in a hospital setting
