AtkinsRéalis Building Design Practice is looking to appoint a Fire Engineer who is looking to further develop their career within a forward‑thinking multi‑sector practice. This opportunity will involve working as part of a national practice of design professionals delivering fire engineering design solutions to clients across a wide variety of sectors, including Cities & Development, Commercial, Energy, Residential and Transportation.

Preferred UK locations: Bristol, Epsom, Glasgow, London or Derby.

As a Principal Fire Engineer, you will take responsibility for your own projects but also work collaboratively with other senior team members to develop the team and strengthen technical capability.

Your Purpose

  • Work in a range of sectors from residential buildings through to rail transportation or new energy facilities.
  • Manage multiple engineering projects from inception through to delivery in support of fire safety standards and codes while also supporting junior team members.
  • Support the delivery of project work and keep track of evolving project milestones and budgets.
  • Keep up to date with regulations and legislation.
  • Support the development of fire strategies.
  • Assess fire‑related risks in projects and work collaboratively to mitigate where possible.
  • Review and comment on the quality of fire safety related installations.
  • Undertake tenders for new work and develop client relationships to create potential work opportunities.
  • Prepare reports, take part in design team meetings, and liaise with client representatives as required.
  • Support junior team members and act as a technical reviewer on project submissions.

What You Can Bring

  • Engineering degree, preferably in fire engineering or a post‑graduate qualification in fire engineering (applications from other backgrounds are also considered).
  • 10+ years in fire engineering roles, including roles outside of consultancy.
  • Strong experience working with multiple fire standards including, but not limited to, BS9999, NFPA 130, BS9992, EN45545.
  • Demonstrate a strong record of successfully delivering fire strategies.
  • Fire modelling experience will be beneficial.
  • Working towards chartered fire engineer status.
  • Ability to obtain security clearance, ideally without caveats.
  • A flexible approach to the working environment and willingness to travel.
  • Good commercial awareness and customer focus.
  • Ability to collate information and have a clear and structured approach to report writing.

We offer a flexible working arrangement, with no fixed 9‑to‑5 schedule, no requirement for a full‑time contract, and no mandate to spend all working time in the office. Our IT systems support homeworking and allow employees to work remotely when required.

Security Clearance

This role may require security clearance. Offers of employment will depend on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If necessary, the vetting process will be discussed during the interview and may require proof of UK residency for at least five years.
