We’re growing our Life Sciences & Research Cost Management team and seeking a Project Cost Manager to oversee commercial delivery for laboratory, research and specialised science facilities. This role is ideal for a Quantity Surveying professional who enjoys managing the full commercial lifecycle of projects in technical, regulated settings — from cost planning and procurement through on‑site cost control to final account settlement — across a portfolio that includes flagship science facilities and rapid‑turnaround programmes.

Role accountabilities

  • Own the commercial delivery of assigned projects, managing cost plans, cashflows and forecasts from inception to completion
  • Produce robust cost plans, feasibility appraisals and benchmark studies tailored to lab and life‑science environments
  • Lead tender analysis, contractor evaluation and negotiation of commercial terms
  • Run valuation and payment processes, manage variations and ensure rigorous cost control on site
  • Maintain risk registers and change control processes; provide timely commercial advice to clients and project teams
  • Prepare clear, client‑facing commercial reports and cost forecasts to support decision‑making
  • Coordinate with design and delivery teams to drive value engineering and mitigate cost exposure
  • Promote and apply digital cost workflows (eg CostX, 5D BIM) and benchmarking to improve accuracy and efficiency
  • Provide guidance to junior QS colleagues and support the continuous improvement of team processes

Qualifications & Experience

  • Chartered Quantity Surveyor (MRICS desirable) or near attainment
  • QS experience on laboratory, research or other MEP‑intensive facilities
  • Proven capability in cost planning, forecasting, procurement and contract administration
  • Strong commercial judgement with practical experience resolving on‑site cost issues and variations
  • Confident communicator able to present commercial positions to clients and contractors
  • Experience with digital cost tools (CostX, 5D BIM) and benchmarking techniques would be beneficial
  • Flexibility to cover Cambridge, London and other sites as required
