The Operational Control Centre manages the SP Energy Networks Transmission and Distribution networks. It is responsible for both planned and fault work and delivers excellent customer service.

The Senior Control Engineer (Transmission or Distribution) role is a shift‑based opportunity located in the SPEN Headquarters in Glasgow, reporting to the Control Room Manager.

In this role you will be responsible for the control and operation of either the Transmission or Distribution electrical networks under normal, outage and fault situations. This involves leading a team in the management of safety, system integrity, customer service and coordination of system access while ensuring compliance with our licence.

What you’ll be doing

  • Facilitate change within the Operational Control Centre as the Transmission and Distribution networks transition to Net Zero and Clean Power 2030.
  • Work with new and existing generation partners to utilise flexibility service arrangements.
  • Review and investigate system performance following major incidents and faults.
  • Give advice and support on technical matters relating to the network.
  • Manage operational interfaces with multiple parties including NESO, NGET, other DNOs and large industrial customers.
  • Approve and control all outage and network access requests for the Transmission or Distribution networks ensuring risk to the network and system security is minimised.
  • Co‑ordinate outage planning and liaison with internal/external third parties for all network activities.
  • Implement and manage Electricity System Restoration (ESR) procedures and all liaison activities associated with the Transmission System Operator, Transmission system owner, and ERS power stations.
  • Control and implement all power system defence mechanisms including demand reduction under OC6, ESEC and low frequency events.
  • Actively participate in business and organisational change to maintain or improve performance, productivity and service standards of SPEN.
  • Implement Contingency & Emergency Plans and escalates significant incidents throughout the business as required.
  • Complete all statutory reports and paperwork for network incidents.
  • Actively monitor CML outage requests to minimise effect on system and targets.
  • Support provision of operational data so that operational IT systems are accurate (e.g., SOP/ TLR).
  • Be active in improving/developing and introducing new processes, procedures and initiatives.
  • Take ownership of objectives to improve safety and customer service culture across the team and operations business.
  • Act as line manager for a small team, overseeing their training, development and overall performance.

  • Working knowledge of key Energy Networks policies, procedures and working practices.
  • Takes responsibility and accountability for tasks and activities, providing support, advice, encouragement, and clear direction and coaching when appropriate.
  • Interpretation of asset data & post‑fault analysis of plant and equipment.
  • Ability to define and document new processes for key strategic changes within the Control Room.
  • Working knowledge of SPEN policies, procedures and working practices.
  • Working knowledge of health, safety and environmental legislation.
  • Developed negotiation, communication, influencing and people‑management skills.
  • Developed knowledge of transmission and/or distribution systems and outage planning.
  • Effective decision maker unimpeded by consultation when necessary or provides lead as required.

Minimum Criteria

  • HNC with relevant experience or degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Previous Control Room knowledge/experience (advantageous).
  • Detailed distribution and/or transmission network knowledge.
  • Operational experience at 33 kV and above (advantageous).
  • PowerOn/SCADA experience (advantageous).
