The Business Intelligence Support Analyst provides essential first-line support to the Trust’s analytics, reporting and business intelligence activities. As a key contact point for reporting queries, system access, ticket triage and routine data quality tasks, the postholder helps ensure consistent, timely and accurate delivery of intelligence services across MPFT. In line with the department objectives, the role supports a more streamlined, standardised and digitally-enabled reporting function through structured triage processes, better utilisation monitoring, improved data governance, and ensuring that automated and self-service reporting platforms (e.g. Power BI) are used effectively by staff across the organisation.

Main duties of the job

  • Act as the first‑line response for Business Intelligence (BI) queries, ensuring timely triage, clear communication and appropriate escalation.
  • Maintain and update request tickets, progress logs and stakeholder communications.
  • Support the production and refresh of routine automated Power BI reports and dashboards.
  • Assist with data extraction and validation for Freedom of Information (FOI) requests.
  • Maintain and monitor report usage statistics, identifying redundant or low‑value reporting for rationalisation in support of the MOC objective to reduce duplication.
  • Manage role‑based access to reporting systems, ensuring appropriate permissions based on starters, leavers and role changes.
  • Perform initial quality assurance and testing of new dashboards before end‑user release.
  • Maintain BI knowledge‑base articles, guides and procedural documentation to support standardised working.
  • Provide basic analysis and validation checks to support data quality improvement across BI outputs.

Job responsibilities

The Business Intelligence Support Analyst provides first‑line support for reporting and analytics across MPFT, ensuring staff receive timely, accurate and helpful responses to BI queries. The role supports the delivery, testing and refresh of Power BI dashboards, helps maintain reporting access permissions, and contributes to data quality checks to ensure consistency and reliability of outputs.

The postholder manages ticket triage and communication with users, supports FOI data extraction and documentation, and maintains BI guidance, knowledge‑base materials and process documentation. They also assist in rationalising the reporting suite by reviewing usage patterns and identifying dashboards or reports that can be retired or improved.

This role underpins the Trust’s transition towards a more efficient, standardised and customer‑focused analytics service, supporting automation, governance and improved reporting pathways.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training

  • Educated in Computer Science, or equivalent experience in related field.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • ITIL Foundation Courses.

Experience

  • Experience of acting as a first line of support for data, reporting, or information queries within a busy service environment.
  • In‑depth experience of analysing and interpreting complex information and presenting it in a simplified manner.
  • Experience of designing, developing and evaluating new reporting requirements.
  • Experience of triaging new requests, providing an initial response, and carrying out basic scoping to understand requirements and priorities.
  • Experience of supporting Freedom of Information (FOI) responses, including data extraction, validation, and coordination with service teams.
  • Providing an NHS information service working with large, aggregate reports e.g. NHS central returns and commissioning datasets.
  • Experience generating reports using web‑based reporting services e.g. Microsoft SQL Reporting Services and Microsoft Power BI.
  • Experience of using IT based service management skills i.e. ITIL or equivalent.
  • Experience of working in a complex and demanding environment.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Knowledge of Business Intelligence information reporting tools i.e. Microsoft Power BI.
  • Information analysis and reporting skills, analysing, interpreting complex information, and presenting it in a simplified manner.
  • Confidently able to work with large, aggregate reports e.g. NHS central returns and commissioning datasets.
  • Ability to manage and prioritise multiple incoming requests, keeping stakeholders informed of progress and timescales.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to provide detailed advice to all audiences.
  • Knowledge of the NHS commissioning and regulatory landscape.
  • Knowledge and understanding of procedures and guidelines around NHS central returns and commissioning datasets and contract monitoring.
  • Understanding of NHS care structures and information flows within the NHS.
  • General understanding of the Caldicott Guidelines, Data Quality Standards and GDPR.
  • Knowledge of the NHS Data Dictionary, Strong and understanding of relevant NHS policies and initiatives.
