An exciting opportunity has become available to join the Finance department as an Assistant Finance Business Partner. We are looking for forward‑thinking, highly motivated finance professionals who are keen to develop within a dynamic NHS environment.

Main duties of the job

Reporting to the Finance Business Partner, the main responsibilities of the role are:

  • Produce high‑quality, relevant Cost Centre Reports on a strict monthly timetable.
  • Ensure all input documents are complete and accurate, analysing confidential data streams and meeting monthly and year‑end timetables.
  • Work closely with budget managers to understand performance variances and support planning of out‑turn forecasts for directorates.
  • Assist with payroll matters, providing accurate staffing costs, updating staff‑in‑post lists and translating WTE into meaningful service data.
  • Respond to ad‑hoc requests from budget managers for financial analysis of all aspects of the service, including staff costing analysis.
  • Help the Finance Business Partner support improvement schemes within directorates, continually challenging existing ways of working.
  • Support the production of financial information for business cases, including historic service costs for comparison with future configurations.
  • Take a proactive role in training, education and financial awareness of budget managers, highlighting the financial implications of individual actions and ensuring advice complies with the Trust’s Standing Financial Instructions and Schemes of Delegation.

Knowledge & Skills – Essential criteria

  • Meet deadlines through effective organisational and planning skills.
  • Undertake highly complex analysis producing results that may have material consequences for the organisation.
  • Interpret technical advisory roles and present information clearly.
  • Demonstrate good presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Show commitment to openness, honesty, inclusiveness & personal integrity.

Knowledge & Skills – Desirable criteria

  • Knowledge of key financial performance targets for the NHS and the NHS funding regime.

Training & Qualifications – Essential criteria

  • Experience or knowledge of financial procedures and techniques equivalent to AAT.
  • Technician level or actively studying towards a professional accountancy qualification.
  • Commitment to commence study of a CCAB finance qualification.

Training & Qualifications – Desirable criteria

  • Honours degree or equivalent.
  • CCAB part qualified (e.g. CIPFA diploma level).

Experience – Essential criteria

  • Recent, relevant work experience within a management accounting environment in a large and complex organisation.
  • Experience using computerised accounting software.

Experience – Desirable criteria

  • Previous NHS finance experience.
  • Sound knowledge of costing principles.
