Job overview

Provide a safe and secure environment across University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust sites, including the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital & Louisa Martindale Building. Manage traffic flows and car parking across the Trust’s sites, advise staff, patients and visitors on parking arrangements, and maximise revenue from Car Parking facilities.

Main duties

  • Manage traffic flow and access/egress of vehicles into Trust car parks and access roads in line with the Trust Traffic Management & Car Parking Policy.
  • Undertake cash collection and reconciliations as required.
  • Conduct daily checks and maintenance of car parking facilities & equipment including barriers, ticket & payment machines.
  • Issue enforcement notices in line with Trust policy.
  • Perform regular foot patrols of the hospital car parks and access roads.
  • Provide traffic support in emergency incidents on Trust premises.
  • Monitor relevant CCTV footage.
  • Ensure equipment such as radio communications and body‑worn cameras are maintained.
  • Prevent loss of property belonging to the Trust, staff, patients and visitors.
  • Carry out other duties directed by the Group Head of Security or authorised representative.

Detailed responsibilities

  • Deal sensitively and empathetically with individuals seeking help with parking or navigating the hospital sites.
  • Communicate by telephone, intercom and face‑to‑face with staff, visitors, patients, and external agencies.
  • Ensure effective communication between internal and external agencies.
  • Document, update and maintain records of traffic activity or incidents in line with legislation and SOPs.
  • Participate in training and learning opportunities to improve skill levels and knowledge.
  • Carry out reasonable duties requested by manager or supervisor as required by service needs.
  • Complete statutory, mandatory and job‑related training.

Qualifications and experience

  • No qualifications required.
  • Training to be provided.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy.
  • SIA Door Supervisor licence.
  • Experience of traffic management / car parking.
  • Experience of radio use.

Skills

  • Proficient use of ICT.
  • Recognise competing priorities between income generation from car parking and sensitivity of a healthcare environment.
  • Ability to respond to planned and unplanned activity including emergencies.
  • Capable of analysing information and making sound judgments based on analysis.

People management & development

  • Experience communicating complex or contentious information to staff and others at all levels, both internal and external.

Specific requirements

  • Honesty and integrity.
  • Full UK Manual Category B driving licence (car).
