Senior Nuclear Medicine Technologist

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Technologist/Radiographer to join our team. The Nuclear Medicine Department provides a diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine service at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital. The department consists of three gamma cameras across two sites, SPECT/CT facilities including a GE Starguide SPECT/CT scanner installed Dec‑2023, a PET/CT scanner at the CHH site, and a new build Molecular Imaging Research Centre with cyclotron and radiopharmacy facilities will support the Department.

Main Duties

  • Provide technologist duties in the Nuclear Medicine Departments, including imaging, i.v. and intra‑dermal administration of radiopharmaceuticals and in‑vitro techniques on an ad hoc basis.
  • Work shifts within 07:30 am‑20:00 pm within a compliance shift system; early shifts may commence with the opening of the new Molecular Imaging Research Centre.
  • Prioritise demanding workloads and work under own initiative.
  • Serve as a key member of the Nuclear Medicine Team, with direct contact with patients, medical, nursing and other staff.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Applicants must possess a BSc/HNC or equivalent in radiography, science or health‑related subject and have completed competency‑based nuclear medicine training.
  • Post‑qualification/radiopharmacy experience is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrate personal and professional development through appropriate study and training.
  • Display a positive attitude to change and development.
  • Knowledge of IRR17 and IR(ME)R17 regulations during radiopharmaceutical preparation, administration, and imaging workflows.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safe handling, storage, transport and disposal of radioactive materials in accordance with local rules and RPA guidance.
  • Knowledge of maintaining aseptic technique in radiopharmacy areas, following GMP principles, environmental monitoring requirements and contamination control procedures.
  • Knowledge of QC procedures in line with local SoPs.
  • Use of Essence of Care principles—privacy, dignity, communication and patient experience—when preparing patients for nuclear medicine procedures.
  • Participate in audit, dose optimisation reviews, quality improvement activities and multidisciplinary discussions to enhance service quality.
  • Be able to work on own initiative.
  • Works well within a team.
  • Demonstrates understanding of confidentiality.
  • Evidence of clinical and professional development.
  • HNC/Degree in Medical Physics/Physiological Measurement or other relevant subject or a DCR/BSc Radiography.
  • Accredited nuclear medicine technologist training such as IPEM or equivalent including nuclear medicine practical competencies.
  • Eligibility for admission to the Register of Clinical Technologists/HCPC registration (e.g. degree or equivalent plus specialist training).
  • IV cannulation and venepuncture skills.
  • Teaching/tutoring/mentoring in the workplace.
  • Cardiac stress room experience.
