Overview

Whitechapel Gallery is a ground-breaking arts institution located in London’s East-End. This permanent, hybrid role offers a salary in the region of £72,000 – £75,000 per annum with excellent benefits including access to discounts, exhibitions and events. Role

Director of Development — reporting to the Gallery’s Director, Gilane Tawadros. This is a leadership role bearing strategic responsibility for cultivating, stewarding and growing philanthropic income to support the Gallery’s mission, sustainability and ambition. The postholder will lead strategic planning, execution and growth of the Gallery’s fundraising efforts, including major gifts, donor relationships, campaigns and income streams from individuals, trusts and foundations, and corporate sponsors.

A key focus for 2026/27 is leading a multi-million campaign for the 125th anniversary, articulating the Gallery’s historic significance, contemporary relevance and future vision to secure transformational support from UK and international donors, partners and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the strategic planning, execution and growth of fundraising efforts aligned with the Gallery’s mission, values and long-term sustainability.
  • Secure major gifts and cultivate donor relationships; develop income streams from individuals, trusts and foundations, and corporate sponsors.
  • Lead fundraising campaigns and manage multi-strand fundraising initiatives.
  • Manage Development teams, supporting and motivating them to deliver against agreed targets.
  • Act as a senior ambassador for Whitechapel Gallery, working effectively with Trustees at a senior level.
  • Provide strategic leadership, ethical judgment and intellectual rigor in translating organisational ambition into fundraising priorities and tangible outcomes.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across departments to ensure alignment of fundraising with institutional strategy.

Qualifications and experience

  • Substantial experience in fundraising, preferably within the arts and culture sector.
  • Demonstrable record of securing major philanthropic support and leading complex, multi-strand fundraising strategies and high-profile campaigns.
  • Experience in managing Development teams and motivating staff to achieve targets.
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building abilities, and experience working with Trustees at a senior level.
