Detention Custody Officer – Campsfield IRCLocation: Langford Lane, OxfordSalary: £31,500 + free Mitie shares, with potential to earn more via overtime.40hrs per week (rolling shift pattern with a mixture of short and long days, including a set of night shifts).

Responsibilities

  • Care for residents entrusted to us at the centre, ensuring exceptional standards of safety, security, dignified care, and respect.
  • Support and encourage residents to engage in recreational activities, arts, crafts and other opportunities for cultural expression.
  • Carry out shift audits, administration, counts and searches of residents and report accurately and timely on our systems.
  • Ensure the safe accommodation and detention of residents so they do not come to harm.
  • Pro-actively identify and support any resident suffering a deterioration in physical or mental health and wellbeing.

What we are looking for

Being a Detention Custody Officer demands emotional intelligence, patience, resilience and professionalism. Good communication skills are required to work effectively as part of a team. You may need to resolve conflict or prevent residents from harming themselves or others. Part-time applications are also welcomed and can be considered.

Specific Requirements

  • You must be a British citizen, EU citizen with settled status, or have ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain).
  • Bankruptcy history, CCJs, social media activity and criminal convictions will be checked.
  • You must have lived in the UK for the past three years with no significant footprint outside of the UK other than for normal holidays.
  • You will also be required to pass a basic maths and English test, and a mobility test.

Other Conditions

Due to the safety-critical nature of this role, employees must not be under the influence of any substance—including prescribed medication—that may impair their ability to perform their duties safely. This includes any THC-based prescriptions. You may discuss any medication affecting safety-critical tasks with us; reasonable adjustments are possible in line with the Equality Act 2010.

A random drug and alcohol testing programme is operated. By applying you acknowledge that participation in this testing is a condition of employment.
