Key Responsibilities

As a laboratory technician you will support asbestos bulk sample analysis, laboratory operations and reporting to ensure accurate, compliant results.

  • Analyze asbestos bulk samples in accordance with HSG 248 and pursue RSPH certification.
  • Analyze samples for asbestos content following contract KPIs.
  • Collate, prepare and issue bulk certificate documentation in line with KPIs.
  • Assist Laboratory Supervisors with laboratory management, stock level notifications and maintenance.
  • Maintain targets and KPIs set by the Laboratory Supervisors and act on urgent instructions.
  • Participate in QC and UKAS procedures as required.
  • Communicate with team members and clients.
  • Issue regular updates on sample quantities at each stage for the weekly target.
  • Undertake any necessary training and development.
  • Perform other administrative duties as required.

Apprenticeship Eligibility

  • Be 18 or over.
  • Not be in full‑time education.
  • Live in the UK for at least 3 years.
  • Have the right to work in the UK.
  • Applicants should not already hold a Level 3 qualification, degree or higher in a closely related subject, or have significant experience in the same field.

Training and Development

As part of a Level 3 Asbestos Laboratory Technician apprenticeship, you will learn to carry out bulk asbestos analysis, apply recognised analytical techniques and contribute to producing accurate, compliant, legally defensible results.

Over 12 months you will combine day‑to‑day experience with structured training delivered by expert tutors at Tiro.

You will spend at least 6 hours per week on off‑the‑job training, including virtual learning, practical activities and applied assignments.

You will work toward the RSPH Level 3 Award in Asbestos Bulk Analysis, a recognized qualification within the industry.

Future Opportunities

The apprenticeship provides a pathway to progress within the industry, potentially becoming an Asbestos Bulk Analyst, a Registered Science Technician (RSciTech) and opening up further technical and scientific roles.
