WSP seeks an enthusiastic Technical Director for the Roads team in Birmingham. This senior role focuses on project delivery, technical excellence, design management and expanding client relationships within the Roads portfolio.
Role
This role is client‑facing and requires a proven track record of delivering transport schemes. Key responsibilities include:
- Managing and leading technical project teams to deliver project scope.
- Serving as Design Manager on complex, multi‑disciplinary programmes.
- Providing technical leadership for the Liverpool office, supporting audits and developing junior team members.
- Visible leadership of health, safety and wellbeing.
- Overseeing technical preparation, review and checking of deliverables.
- Managing project risk and opportunity to ensure effective coordination of multi‑disciplinary work.
- Optimising resources to meet fluctuating workloads.
- Working with clients and design teams to deliver compliant designs on time and within budget, meeting CDM, QA and review requirements.
- Participating in tender bids and business development opportunities.
- Collaborating with other WSP teams to utilise additional resources.
- Setting a technical leadership tone in the office and fostering a supportive, passionate culture.
What We Will Be Looking For
- Experience leading large technical teams.
- Technical delivery leadership and financial control of major Roads programmes.
- Track record as Design Manager on major Roads programmes, including multi‑disciplinary design integration and quality audits.
- Broad project experience in civil engineering and multi‑disciplinary highways projects.
- Experience in technical and financial leadership of Design and Build contracts.
- Competency in design software such as Autodesk Civil 3D, Bentley OpenRoads Designer, or PDS.
- Ability to motivate, drive change and inspire colleagues.
- Commercial and strategic capability with a record of new business development.
- Proactive change management with clear communication of impacts.
- Influential and persuasive communication, internally and externally.
- Deep knowledge of relevant design codes (Design Manual for Roads & Bridges, Manual for Streets, TSRGD, local authority guidance) and capability in drawing preparation for contracts and approvals.
- Chartered Civil Engineer with ICE or CIHT; Fellowship status or in progress.
- Experience complying with Designers’ Duties under CDM regulations.
