You will play a pivotal role in supporting the small business cause by managing a diverse portfolio of risks at a macro level. This isn’t just about technical frameworks; it’s about championing small business success by leading technical excellence and using market research to develop world‑class underwriting. You will have a direct impact on the business by monitoring account performance and driving frequent pricing and product actions.

This role offers end‑to‑end exposure to the entire insurance business, allowing you to see the impact of your work across the board. You’ll be a pioneer, bringing fresh ideas to challenge the status quo and move the business forward while coaching and training junior members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of portfolio performance, ensuring long‑term sustainability.
  • Collaboratively manage technical frameworks, including pricing models, underwriting rules, policy wordings and endorsements.
  • Exercise underwriting authority by making expert judgements and managing the technical referral process for the wider team.
  • Build and own strategic relationships with key stakeholders and insurer partners.
  • Maintain technical rigor by supporting audit and peer‑review processes.
  • Deliver large‑scale internal projects focused on providing genuine value to customers.

Qualifications

  • Expertise in the commercial SME market with a deep underwriting background.
  • Knowledge of portfolio mechanics and ability to control a diverse book of business.
  • Data‑driven and analytical approach to technical underwriting.
  • Strong communicator capable of simplifying complex technical work while maintaining detail.
  • Relationship builder who can negotiate commercials with insurer partners.
  • Committed to professional learning – ideally near completion of an ACII qualification.

Benefits

  • Work‑life balance, flexible hybrid working, 25 days annual leave (plus bank holidays) and option to buy five more days.
  • Flexible parental leave: six months full pay for primary caregiver, four weeks full pay for secondary caregiver.
  • Life event leave: extra days every two years; paid sabbatical after five years of service and four weeks after ten years.
  • Private medical insurance and health cash plan.
  • Competitive salary with potential annual bonus.
  • Access to learning platform and mental health counseling.
  • Matching pension contributions up to five per cent and tax‑free life assurance coverage.
  • Salary‑sacrifice car scheme after six months.
  • Flexible benefits scheme allocation.
