Operational Engineer (Mechanical & Electrical)

Rate: £45–£50 per hour (Umbrella)
Working Pattern: Full-time
The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Operational Engineer to join a cutting-edge engineering and technology environment focused on early-stage innovation.
Working within a fast-paced design, build and test function, you will play a key role in transforming early concepts into working prototypes, supporting the development of new technologies through safe, compliant and robust test solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build test rigs and prototype systems to support early-stage product and technology development
- Ensure all builds are safe, compliant and fit for purpose, mitigating risks associated with development activities
- Support rapid iteration cycles, working closely with engineers and technicians to refine solutions
- Carry out design risk assessments and hazard analysis to ensure safe testing environments
- Produce clear technical documentation to support development and knowledge sharing
- Promote and uphold a strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with relevant engineering standards and regulations
Skills & Experience
- Strong engineering background across mechanical, electrical or electronic disciplines
- Experience working in an R&D, prototype or exploratory engineering environment
- Hands-on experience building mechanical/electrical systems, rigs or equipment
- Knowledge of engineering standards and directives (e.g. Machinery Directive, PUWER, CE/UKCA)
- Experience conducting risk assessments and hazard analysis
- Strong problem-solving ability with a proactive, delivery-focused mindset
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams
