Main duties of the job

To work as a member of an acute foot multidisciplinary team based at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. To provide a highly specialised wound care assessment within the outpatients, inpatients, and emergency care settings. Patients will include those with long term conditions, such as diabetes and renal disease. Patients may also be very complex with multiple co‑morbidities. To formulate a clinical diagnosis and treatment plan as an autonomous practitioner. To use clinical judgement and discretion in the advanced assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients with complex pathologies, which puts them at increased risk of amputation, morbidity and mortality. To provide advanced wound care techniques in their practice, including casting, negative pressure wound therapy and larval therapy. To work towards achieving competencies in advanced, specialised care, such as independent prescribing. To mentor students, and supervise, teach and appraise junior podiatrists. To share the responsibility for operational management of the podiatry department, participate in service development, and participate in evidence‑based projects.

Person Specification

Education & professional Qualifications

  • oBSc Degree in Podiatric Medicine or Diploma (if qualified prior to 1992)
  • oHealth Professions Council (HPC) registration
  • oCertificate in local anaesthesia
  • oEvidence or portfolio of post‑graduate continued development
  • oEvidence of study or intention to study to masters level qualification

Experience

  • oExperience of working at a band 6 level or above in an acute hospital setting with a high risk caseload
  • oExperience of multidisciplinary and interagency working
  • oExperience of working with a wide range of patient and disease/pathology types including the at‑risk and high‑risk foot and neurovascular tests
  • oExperience of acute and chronic at risk wound care management
  • oAwareness/experience of setting & maintaining clinical standards and clinical audit
  • oEvidence of contribution to change within the workplace
  • oUnderstanding of role of podiatry within current evolving health environment
  • oPrevious experience of junior staff & student supervision/ clinical education
  • oActively involved in teaching to the multidisciplinary team
  • oEvidence of presentation of own research/project work

Skills and aptitudes

  • oCore skills in Podiatry, knowledge of acute foot conditions and wound management
  • oAbility to undertake intricate work in using sensitive diagnostic tools and a range of surgical instruments. e.g in the management and debridement of poor tissue viability wounds and nail surgery
  • oKnowledge of recent developments in the profession
  • oKnowledge and understanding of the NICE Diabetes guidelines and NSF in diabetes
  • oPositive attitude to change
  • oExcellent time management and organisational skills
  • oAbility to work within Trust policies, including clinical governance, data protection, equal opportunities, and health and safety, to meet the differing needs of the patient
  • oTo manage stressful situations by remaining calm, objective and professional at all times
  • oAble to carry out concurrent activities (multi‑tasking) and work in an unpredictable working pattern
  • oTo be proactive in service development, liaising closely with the MDT in order to promote clinical excellence
